Our Dumpling Picks for the Dragon Boat Festival

Dragon Boat Festival is looming. We had a taste of various dumplings this season – from the sweet to the savoury – and the winner is definitely Peony Jade Restaurant’s Steamed Cantonese ‘Emperor Guo Cheng Zhong’ (香港乾隆裹蒸粽). We heard this particular dumpling was sold out last season, so we had to try it before it was snapped up.

We are generally cautious when there is too much hype around a certain food item, as it causes us to have unfairly high expectations… But we are glad to say the ‘Emperor Guo Cheng Zhong’ (S$28.80 per piece) has lived up to expectations.

The chef has skilfully wrapped salted egg yolk, 10 heads abalone, roasted pork belly, dried scallops and more into a tight banana leaf. After steaming, the result is a blend of sinewy meat coated with mashed yolk and fragrant rice grains.

Yes, we are aware the oily dumplings may cause an extra fold to that belly, but since we will be celebrating the festival anyway, we figured we might as well indulge in the most indulgent version of the rice dumpling.

Other flavours include the Kee Zhang with Salted Gula Melaka (S$3.90 per piece or S$10.50 for 3 pieces), Savoury Pork & Mui Choy Zhong (S$7.80 per piece), Nyonya Chili Anchovies and Peanuts Zhang (S$13.50 for 3 pieces) and for the durian lovers, the incredibly dense Mao Shan Wang Durian version.

These dumplings are available for takeaway and dining in at Peony Jade Restaurant’s Clarke Quay & Keppel Club outlets till 2 June 2014.
