New Music Friday: Gentle Force – Popspoken

New Music Friday: Gentle Force

AUTHOR

In today’s sonic landscape, there’s a rising tide of artists who master the balance between aggression and gentleness — a duality that resonates with listeners navigating the intensity of modern life while craving softness at its core.

One artist embodying this beautifully is CatchTwentyTwo. The South Florida singer, songwriter, and producer crafts tracks that hit hard emotionally while wrapping the listener in vulnerability. His latest project, the “love evangelist“, produced, recorded, and engineered entirely by himself, explores this intersection with finesse. Whether it’s the raw honesty of his lyrics or the atmospheric layers of his production, CatchTwentyTwo invites us into a soundscape where force meets fragility.

Reflecting on his journey from being signed to Ultra Records and now going independent, CatchTwentyTwo shares:

“It was interesting because I gave my time and music to Ultra for a year when I was 21; felt discouraged that I wasn’t super famous with millions of monthly listeners traveling the world just yet. They found me within less than a year of me releasing music independently.”

Emerging in late 2019 after finding inspiration in Michael Jackson’s performances on YouTube, CatchTwentyTwo has charted his own path — from choir classes to the SXSW stage in 2022. Projects like “exxxtreme disco” and the “love evangelist” offer proof of his dedication to doing it all: writing, producing, engineering — and feeling deeply.

Then, there’s the Jennie effect. The phrase “sounds like Jennie” has taken root in fan communities to describe tracks that mirror BLACKPINK’s Jennie’s signature sound — a fiery blend of hip-hop with Brazilian funk and phonk, layered over vocals that can shift from razor-sharp to feather-soft in a heartbeat.

Like Jennie isn’t just a song; it’s a blueprint for this balance of aggression and tenderness. The track’s bold, infectious energy has inspired comparisons to songs by SEVENTEEN (FireLalali), ITZY, Stray Kids, and Le Sserafim. Yet, it also sparked controversy — some listeners pointed to similarities with Rani’s Intro Theme from Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, adding another layer of complexity to this conversation about influence and originality.
