Cannes Lions 2026: Creativity’s New Rules

The Cannes Lions Creativity Report 2026 is out, offering a closer look at the ideas that defined this year’s global creative landscape—and the changing relationship between brands and increasingly sceptical audiences.

The report examines this year’s Lion-winning work alongside jury insights and emerging creative trends, highlighting how creativity is being used not only to capture attention, but to build trust, participation and genuine cultural impact.

Four themes stand out: Fair Trade, Sound Reasoning, Fan Folklore and Tackling Truth.

Fair Trade reflects a move away from interruption towards value exchange. The strongest campaigns, according to the report, gave audiences something meaningful in return for their attention rather than relying on increasingly elaborate ways to break through.

Sound Reasoning looks at the growing importance of sonic identity in a fragmented media environment. Winning work demonstrated how recognisable cultural sounds can become distinctive brand cues across platforms and formats.

Fan Folklore explores a more participatory approach to storytelling. Rather than simply telling audiences what a campaign means, brands invited them to investigate mysteries, unexpected events and conspiracies—turning advertising into something audiences could actively explore.

And as AI-generated content and deepfakes make questions of authenticity more complicated, Tackling Truth emerged as another defining theme. This year’s work increasingly put transparency at the centre, showing audiences the human evidence behind brand claims rather than simply asking them to believe.

Taken together, the trends suggest that creative excellence in 2026 is becoming less about demanding attention and more about earning it—through usefulness, recognisability, participation and proof.
