Kinokuniya is celebrating Free Comic Book Day this Saturday (May 4) by doing as the event suggests.
Kinokuniya Takashimaya will be giving away free comics to its privilege card holders on a first-come-first-served basis. Each member is limited to one turn and the giveaway will continue while stocks last.
All customers who purchase a comic book and rack up a minimum spend of S$120 nett are entitled to a sure-win lucky dip. Any purchase of an English-language comic book will come with a complimentary X-Men: Dark Phoenix goodie bag.
Free Comic Book Day is celebrated around the world on the first Saturday in May. This year’s edition even coincides with the Star Wars pun “May the fourth be with you”.
The annual promotional effort by the US comic book industry started in California in 2002 and aimed to bring new readers into independent comic book stores.
The first Free Comic Book Day, held on May 4, 2002, was planned to coincide with the extensive marketing around the first Spider-Man film, starring Tobey Maguire (the best Spider-Man, as any 90s kid will tell you).
This year’s iteration in the US features a total of 51 title sponsors, including Riverdale, the comic based on the Netflix series based on the Archie comic series. Late capitalism is a confusing time.
Free Comic Book Day is only valid at Kinokuniya’s main store in Takashimaya Shopping Centre. The store will open from 10am to 10pm on Saturday (May 4). For more details, contact Kinokuniya Takashimaya at 6737 5021.
