Wonder Woman Saves Mankind And The DC Universe In Hit Movie Debut

AUTHOR

Summer 2017 blockbuster “Wonder Woman” can be easily hailed as the saving grace of the DC universe. Since the disappointing “Batman V Superman; Dawn of Justice”, DC has been desperately grasping for a share of the box office over the highly successful and popular Marvel film universe.

Enter Wonder Woman, the femme fatale film that has far surpassed expectations of many.

The gorgeous Princess Diana (Gal Godot) graces the screens as a powerful and ardent saviour of mankind. Raised as a sheltered Amazonian princess on the paradise island of Themyscira, her peaceful life is interrupted by the arrival of Steve Trevor (Chris Pine), an American spy wielding top secret information from the Germans that could save millions of lives.

He tells of the brutal World War raging beyond the shores of her island. Convinced that the God of War, Ares, is behind the war, Diana embarks on her with Trevor, journeying to the front lines of the war to find Ares and restore peace.

The film easily stands out with its captivating storyline that is easy to understand. With screenplay written by Geoff Johns and Allan Heinberg, Wonder Woman engages the audience with its heartwarming and heart-wrenching scenes, centered around the themes of love, righteousness and duty.

With the adorable chemistry between Steve Trevor and Princess Diana, the film is a must-watch for everyone, and not just the geeky superhero lovers.

Think of the last movie with a strong female superhero lead. Barely anything comes up precisely because the last movies with a female superhero lead were flops in the box office. “Catwoman” (2004) and “Elektra (2005) barely scrapped through the box office with their forgettable plots.

In contrast, we see Marvel churning out one male-led superhero film after another, and even those with weaker storylines and development are still somehow able to rake in the big bucks.

Wonder Woman finds a place for itself as being one of the top, if not the top female-starred action superhero movie. With fight scenes that are graceful, elegant yet powerful at the same time, these action-packed sequences are also filled with emotion and purpose. Diana’s purpose as a daughter of the Amazonian queen and fighter for mankind shapes her combat, making the stunning effects of these scenes even more special.

Of course, Wonder Woman is not exactly perfect. The film picks up slightly slowly and many of the unique and eccentric co-stars introduced as Steve’s partners in crime as severely underused. Diana’s naivety about the modern world and the war in addition to her determination to find Ares also gets a bit annoying. We get it!

Still, Wonder Woman has definitely surpassed expectations to make a mark as one of the first and most successful female superhero movies, as well as lighting the path for a promising “Justice League” movie by DC in the near future. DC has finally made an impact in the superhero universe and hopefully, in time to come, it will not disappoint.
