Hands up: when we say “club”, are you thinking of a curious collection of boutique hotel rooms, Daedalian restaurants, and an underground whiskey bar all perched at the corner of Ann Siang hill?
Introducing The Club, and its European offering, The Disgruntled Brasserie.
Quick Look At The Place
As a venue, it shies away from any modern party tropes; and embodies, rather, an appropriateness to contain an amalgamation of 1920’s style and taste. Their one-year mark was recently celebrated with a Gatsby themed party, so one can easily imagine how the bobbed hairs, cloche hats, and flapper slang will fit in here.
If Jay Gatsby were alive today, we can imagine him waiting for Daisy to exit from the powder room (just because there really is a powder room on the ground floor).
Green/Spot-light On The Food
Boasting of four distinct interconnected restaurants within the space, it is a generous amount of choices for a hotel that has only 20 hotel rooms.
Intriguing name decisions serve more than aesthetic pleasure here: whiskey den B28 (fully decked out with safety lockers for the gentleman’s poison), Mr & Mrs Maxwell’s (the modern day “calling” room), Tiger’s Milk (a Peruvian rooftop bar), and finally, The Disgruntled Brasserie.
Is The Disgruntled Brasserie Disgruntled?
Think Eurocentric with an Asian twist, but heavily tailored to the Singaporean tastebud (leans towards the savoury and salty side).
As appetisers, these white slices pack a punch with their fiery concoction of pepper and mustard. The roe and snow crab helps to balance the overall profile out, and it only gets more addictive after the second egg.
Our personal favourite will be the chicken and duck liver parfait, a homemade pate that smoothly blends the best of both animals to become a generous salty serving of foie gras.
Spread it on warm sourdough bread, and you’ll be singing Marilyn Monroe’s I Wanna Be Loved By You to your table partner.
For seafood, appearance is king. The king scallops, delicate and fairy-like, lie in their warm shell cots of butter sauce and vegetables medley.
The baked miso cod is easily one of the most memorable dishes. Served with crispy waffle potato chips, the shiny white flesh comes apart easily, and reveals itself to be at the sweet-spot of fresh and umami.
One of the more Asian profiled dishes, their braised pork cheeks are so tender that they almost compete with the fluffy Yorkshire pudding for the top prize of mouth meltability. The rich sauce is made up of familiar spices that dominate our local dishes, and can elevate the dish to be quite overpowering.
(In retrospect, we recommend saving this for last.)
Save space for the other star: their zesty take on the perennial favourite of custard fans. The citrus concentration helps to cut through the huge meal, refreshing the tastebud at the end. The tart base satisfies the heart with its crunchy texture.
For chocolate fans, they also do a mean sticky toffee pudding. Truly, velvety dark indulgence for the strong-willed ones.
At the end of the day, would Jay Gatsby dine here? We think – for sure.
