Popspoken Picks: Six tracks to check out this month

Step into the second half of the year with fresh music from Singapore and around the world. From synth-pop to hip hop, find your new favourite track from our picks below.

Dagny – ‘Brightsider’

True to the title, ‘Brightsider’ is a radiant indie-pop track that describes the wonders of “catching feelings”. The single arrived just in time for the singer’s live performances in Norway, Germany, the UK and the Netherlands.

Drax Project – ‘Mad at You’

Ahead of the July 8 release of their new EP ‘Diamond’, the four-piece New Zealand act came up with the romantic single ‘Mad at You’. “With New Zealand now opening up to the world again, it feels like the right time to start letting out some of the music we’ve been working on,” the band says in a statement.

Juni Goh – ‘Let the Light In’

Following a successful Mandarin solo debut, the versatile entertainer launched ‘Let the Light In’ with the hopes of soothing those going through a rough time. The self-penned cinematic-pop release was inspired by Goh’s experience with depression and anxiety. “Sometimes all we need is a listening ear and some encouragement,” he says.

TENGY – ‘WHO YOU’

Having years of experience working with musicians like Abangsapau and Gentle Bones, the artist formerly known as Tengyboy has finally come out with his first independent single. In ‘WHO YOU’, a smooth track produced by prodbydan, TENGY reflects on misconceptions, insecurities and struggles surrounding his artistic career.

Will Mara – ‘Movie Night’

Indonesian producer-turned-soloist Mara says the synth-infused indie pop song is his way of embracing his “corny” side. The sweet-sounding track will be a part of his upcoming first full album, due for release this year.

YAØ – ‘Broke Pop Kids’

The Singaporean singer-songwriter returns with ‘Broke Pop Kids’, a melancholic tune that conveys young people’s desire to pursue their dreams and ambitions in a pragmatic world. The song, a preamble to YAØ’s upcoming debut album, is complemented with a lyric video that shows the musician rocking out to the track in a karaoke room.
