Local singer-songwriter Jasmine Sokko flips the script in her new music video for TIRED, released yesterday (May 8).
TIRED draws references from Singapore’s colonial history and tells a story of a reimagined world of power and culture shift, with followers looking up to Jasmine, who plays the central role.
This is Jasmine’s first major release since finishing fourth on the Chinese electronic music reality online show, Rave Now, in February. Jasmine she was the only Singaporean – and the only woman – among the programme’s Top 15 contestants.
“While I was in China, I couldn’t help but realise how westernised Singapore is. Of which I started questioning — why? While I do consume western pop music and movies, I think it’s a fine line to respect a culture but totally another to worship,” said Jasmine in a press release.
The new single continues the introversion first explored on 600D off her 2017 N° EP, with Jasmine singing “I’m tired/not because of my sleep/I don’t like nobody and nobody likes me.”
Shot in Bangkok and Singapore, TIRED marks the third music video collaboration between Jasmine Sokko and Choānn (Martin Hong) following #0000FF and HURT.
“Leading up to the production of the music video, Choānn and I were set on bringing something that was from our country’s history. We probed ourselves (to create) something we feel strongly about from our positions as Asians, as Singaporeans,” she said. “We wanted to look at our country’s history from a different lens.”
The video comes two months after the initial release of TIRED, her second single under Warner Music Singapore in the lead up to her major label EP.
“When I was writing TIRED, I wanted to try something which I had never done. There are only two synth lines going on in the music production — something that is very stripped down. I just wanted the listener to focus on the song and its production intricacies.”
More behind-the-scenes footage of the music video will be released on Jasmine Sokko’s official YouTube account in the weeks to come.
