WOAH Fest: What Do DEON And Of Monsters And Men Have In Common?

The sound of Iceland is about to hit Singapore.

About a week ago, local artist and singer Deon Toh and his band under the name DEON was announced as the opening piece for WOAH Fest’s next act, Of Monsters and Men (OMAM).

What we are really excited to see is the link and synergy that both of the acts share. The inspiration behind DEON’s new album, Oceans, is neither of fantasy novels nor of heartbreak. Conceptualized and written while he was journeying through Europe, the artist revealed in an article with TODAY that his stop at Reykjavik (incidentally the city OMAM came from) played a major role in his songwriting process.

“In Reykjavik, I witnessed the Northern Lights, a sky filled with stars, the blistering cold accompanied by strong winds, a moon rise, and just broad, wide, open spaces,” said Deon, “Plus, the silence in Iceland was magical.”

The post-rock and ambient electronica elements in DEON’s album are interestingly reminiscent of Iceland’s scenic beauty.

The main act of the WOAH Fest side show, Of Monsters and Men, needs no introduction. The five-piece group from Iceland is touring again after releasing their latest album Beneath The Skin a year ago.

Speaking about their music in an interview with Grimes in Interview Magazine, lead singer Nanna Hilmarsdottir described the music from their first album to be “very creatur-ey maybe, fantasy”.

While their second album, Beneath The Skin, takes a turn away from the fantastical and focuses more on their human and personal aspects, the band has not lost their pop-folk quality which still retains the elements of magic and wonder all their fans have come to love.

Come Tuesday when both groups perform, we hope to be treated to an array of distinct, yet connected perspectives. It is the coming together of one artist, born and bred in Singapore, and the other, a world-renowned band based in Europe – both inspired by the scenes and imageries of Iceland.

DEON will be opening for Of Monsters and Men at The Coliseum @ Hard Rock Hotel Singapore at Resorts World Sentosa on May 10th, 8pm as WOAH Fest’s standalone sideshow.
