Your Weekend Gameplan Sorted

We’re not joking when we say Singapore ain’t a sterile country. The diversity of events going in and about this little red dot this weekend is going to leave us spent by Sunday.

Friday, 1 April

We start our weekend by getting our engines fired up at the IP Office of Singapore (IPOS), as they kickstart their World IP Day celebrations. 7 Kickstart, an artisan coffee house based out of the Singapore Art Museum, will school us on the origins of local coffee today at 6pm. Throughout the month of April, expect gelato making sessions, block printing, legal eagles offering their 2 cents worth on the creative scene, art talks, coffee art and basically all things creative, as IPOS celebrates innovation at its best.

As the day fades to dark, we eagerly look towards the various watering holes in search of that rousing TGIF finish. Feeling classy and want to get tuned into the art of nosing whisky? Macallan piques the palette with a series of exquisite Sherry oak treats. For the uninitiated, it’s not too late to start on whisky tasting (from $30) at the classy Black Swan, right in the heart of CBD.

Begin your musical journey at Blu Jaz Cafe where the super swag Darker than Wax x Good Times crew will bring you hot tunes ranging from afrobeat, hiphop and more at Beats and Beyond from 9pm onwards. For those who prefer a deeper sound, head over to the unpretentious Cato for your dose of deep, tech cuts from veteran Aldrin and occasional DJ, Daytime Dancingwho has randomly appeared behind decks at Kyo and Zouk.

Happening just a few blocks down at Kyo is Modern Love, who has swept to our shores a stylish Korean feline based in Berlin, Peggy Gou. Her newest release “Troop” has turned quite a few heads in the electronic music scene, having been featured in reputable magazines like Groove. There will be lots of loving going down at the basement tonight – sign up for your guestlist here.

If you are teetotaller and want something to invigorate your deeper artistic consciousness, NTU Centre for Contemporary Art brings together Li Zhenhua and Dr Marc Glöde who has served as a curator/senior advisor to Berlin, and is versed in film studies, comparative literature and Dutch philology. Explore the relationship and dichotomies oscillating between curatorship and art at Gilman Barracks from 7.30 pm today, details here.

Saturday, 2 April

Where do we begin. Maybe right on top Sofitel So with a snazzy pool party that’s going to happen, rain or shine, haze or no haze.

Prefer something more laidback? Another party is going down at Owl Bar, a hidden gem at Outram Park where a full-blown Brazilian BBQ party  will leave your stomachs reeling. Come nightfall, we salute a local beatboxing maestro, Dharni, who has made a name for himself internationally ever since he left Singapore in 2011. Catch him and K-Leah at Kult Kafe from 8pm onwards.

We’re running out of breath as we reach the end of this listing. Haji Lane, home to vintage clothes, murals, and more recently, eclectic beats. Tiko Tekno is a collaboration between KiDG of Tiko Disko and Sound Forest, bringing you Asian funk, jacuzzi soul (whatever that means) and it’s going to be all mixed up with techno progressive tunes. Happening on the street from 10pm onwards, details here.

For something harder and more banging, Midnight Shift will show you how it’s done with power duo Lily’s Rose (aka Kavan and Debbie), funny guy Jerls Su (who cites Titanic’s soundtrack as one of his influences), and overseas guests Hodge and Rivet.
