American indie rock band Copeland has reunited to release their sixth album after calling it quits in 2009. For the first time ever, this “By Request” series will allow Singapore fans to choose the set list of the show in Singapore.
Copeland (Aaron Marsh, Bryan Laurenson, Jonathan Bucklew and Stephen Laurenson) formed in Lakeland, Florida in 2001 and have come a very long way over the past fifteen years.
The band’s first album, Beneath Medicine Tree, came out in 2003 under indie label The Militia Group. The album’s layered melodies, combined with Marsh’s thoughtful, emotive croon, immediately engaged music fans, offering a nuanced take on the emo music of the early ‘00s. The group unveiled four subsequent albums between 2005 and 2008, including Eat, Sleep, Repeat on Columbia Records in 2006.
Copeland officially broke up in October 2009 after nine years as a band. The band members have pursued other musical endeavors over the past few years. However, the idea of making another album has always been in the back of their minds.
The band got back together again in 2015 to produce a new album under Tooth & Nail Records. The music on latest album Ixora, which is titled after a type of tropical flower found in Florida, is a logical continuation of Copeland’s emotional and atmospheric melodies. Ixora and Ixora Twin was released, which impressively synchronises when played at the same time:
This is Copeland’s fourth time playing in Singapore, after having played at Baybeats Festival 2006, a co-headlining show with Anberlin in 2007 and lastly their own full concert in 2010. This year, it seems like a Singaporean fan actually influenced Copeland’s decision to play in Singapore again through a Twitter conversation:
