Bringing the House Down This Weekend

AUTHOR

A household name in progressive house music, Sander van Doorn, is known for his tightly knit, hard hitting tracks that have commanded the respect of luminaries such as Armin van Buuren. His Dawn to Doorn movement takes a cue from Tarantino’s thought-provoking neo-noir film, Dawn to Dusk; that builds up slowly and ends with an outpouring of energy when dawn breaks.

Sander will be taking the decks to task at Zouk’s Soundsystem this Friday, alongside Hong, an anchor in the local DJ scene and is known for his intuitive ability to drop tracks at opportune moments.

This leaves us torn. Also happening this Friday, is Re:Fuge at Kilo Lounge, a series of monthly parties helmed by their resident dj Maurice Simon. He will be sharing the decks with Dave Seaman, a veteran DJ with 25 years of experience under his belt, and a deep influence on the underground house music scene in UK. Describing his music as “boom tiss boom tiss boom tiss” – he may be at a loss of words, but we are sure Seaman feels the beat as he immerses himself in the crowd, and would definitely be down to groove.

Maurice is known for his rhythmic mixes, with a dollop of soul infused into it. Interlacing his tunes with ambient beats at times, his set will surely get you off your feet, and launch into euphoric dance.

It doesn’t stop there. Scuba (aka Paul Rose), will be invigorating your senses alongside resident Zushan, known for his versatility in switching between hip-hop and tech genres. All this is going down this Saturday at Velvet Underground.

To Scuba, DJ-ing is a creative challenge, it isn’t about the ‘songs’ but the DJ set, and he certainly isn’t about to go commercial.

“I don’t like dogmatic thinking, and the heads tend to think in a dogmatic way,” he says, in an interview for Thump. “But equally, I want to be taken seriously by people who take music seriously. That’s a bit of a tight rope to walk.”

Over at Kyo, something deep, dark and dirty will be happening with Dan Buri, from Bangkok, coming down to rip the dancefloors with local talents Oliver Osborne and Adam Froghyar. Harvesting organic energy from the crowd is said to be Dan’s forte, and something we are keen to witness this Saturday. Having played alongside internationally acclaimed DJs such as Dubfire and Booka Shade, Kyo will certainly be transposed with seismic waves.

We will be taking our music quite seriously this weekend, so should you.
