Singapore’s Night Race Still Sets the Pace

AUTHOR

Seventeen years on, the Formula 1 Singapore Airlines Singapore Grand Prix remains the sport’s most recognisable night race and one of the crown jewels of the F1 calendar worldwide. The Marina Bay Street Circuit has not only delivered iconic on-track moments but also pioneered the fusion of racing, entertainment and community engagement.

Since Fernando Alonso’s second victory in 2010, to Lewis Hamilton’s near-mythic “perfect” lap in 2018, Singapore, has hosted some of F1’s strongest performances. Hamilton was 0.7 seconds faster than some of Mercedes’ own simulations and his “perfect” lap was considered one of the world’s greatest professional race car performances, whereby he demonstrated not just exceptional precision but unparalleled instinct on the Marina Bay Street Circuit, which led to his fourth win as the F1 World Champion. Similarly, Daniel Ricciardo carved his name into local lore with a trio of podium finishes between 2015 and 2017, even setting the current lap record.

Beyond the Chequered Flag

Entertainment has been woven into the race from the start. Headliners such as Katy Perry, Linkin Park, Big Bang and The Killers drew massive crowds in the early years. The now-signature Closing Concert—once headlined by Rihanna—extends the festivities beyond race day and cements Singapore’s reputation as a festival as much as a race, with Korean pop sensation, G Dragon’s stellar return to the entertainment circuit, set to keep things ablaze this year.

Singapore also leads in fan engagement. The Thursday Pit Lane Experience, launched in 2014 and now in its tenth year, gives thousands of locals a rare behind-the-scenes walk along the F1 pit lane before the weekend’s action begins—an initiative many other Grands Prix have tried to emulate.

Attendance numbers tell the story. The 12th edition in 2019 drew its second-highest crowd since 2008, and 2022 shattered records with 302,000 fans over three days. The Red Hot Chili Peppers alone attracted 65,000 to the Padang Stage, underscoring the event’s dual pull as both race and mega-concert.

Constant Evolution

The Singapore GP has never stood still. Track changes in 2023 shortened the layout to improve overtaking and adapt to Marina Bay’s redevelopment. In 2024, Singapore GP Pte Ltd clinched the coveted “Fan Experience” award at the F1 Promoter Awards for its innovative wayfinding, branding and entertainment stages—cementing its place as the benchmark event on the global calendar.

With its mix of dramatic racing, global headliners, record-breaking crowds and community access, the Singapore Grand Prix continues to be more than just another race weekend. It’s a full-scale urban festival under the floodlights, proving year after year why it still sets the pace for the rest of the Formula 1 world.
