A dragon now roars through Moscow’s metro. To mark the start of the Spring Festival, or the past Chinese New Year, the Russian capital has launched a spectacular themed train that’s turning heads underground.

Unveiled at the start of the year, on January 29 the train blazes along its route adorned in brilliant red — the color of good fortune — with powerful images of dragons and snakes, symbols of strength and renewal for the Year of the Dragon. Inside, passengers are surrounded by striking photographs of Chinese New Year celebrations, as if stepping into a moving festival.

At the launch ceremony, Chinese Ambassador to Russia Zhang Hanhui called the train “a bright dragon of friendship between China and Russia,” as the Spring Festival gains new fans in Moscow’s cultural calendar.

“The decorations will capture the imagination of Muscovites and visitors, letting them feel the joy and good luck that the dragon brings,” he said.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova hailed the project as part of the China-Russia Years of Culture 2024-2025, saying the dragon-clad train offers a unique way for citizens to discover Chinese traditions.

Moscow Deputy Mayor Maxim Liksutov described the train as “a tribute to Chinese culture and a powerful symbol of the bond between our nations.”

The dragon train is part of the Chinese New Year in Moscow festival, lighting up Manezhnaya Square and two dozen other locations across the city in the month of February earlier this year. Expect lion dances, lanterns, and plenty of fire-breathing spirit.
