Alternative Picks for Singapore Art Week 2020

As Singapore Art Week rolls around again for the eighth year, and takes over the Civic District from 11 to 19 January 2020, you might find yourself spoilt for choice by the multitude of activities and programmes available. Major festivals—such as the Singapore Biennale, Aliwal Urban Art Festival, Light to Night Festival, and Art After Dark—are clearly a given, but what about the fringe events? Don’t miss out on these alternative gems that should be included in everyone’s Art Week itinerary.

  1. Understanding Art Conservation

This free-entry open house at local studio YH Conservation offers a behind-the-scenes look at the unsung work of art conservators. Forget the usual plays. Take part in A Novel Idea, an alternative theatre experience where the audience gets to choose which performance they’d like to see (a stage adaptation of The Handmaid’s Tale or Of Mice and Men). Priced at $10 per person, the show begins with an on-the-spot voting session, which results in a somewhat impromptu stage reading of the selected text, featuring actors Janice Koh and Daniel Jenkins.

Address: Play Den, The Arts House
Dates: 17 to 18 January (8pm to 8.45pm, 9.45pm to 10.30pm)

AUGUST and Jemima Stehli, new works

London-based feminist artist and photographer Jemima Stehli brings her newest photographic works to Singapore in a free solo exhibition, in which a series of monochrome images have been scribbled over by her five-year-old son. In the process of deliberately defacing the photographs (some of which depict her pregnant self), new works are created as a representation of her complex, evolving relationship with her child.

Address: 1961 Projects
Dates: 17 January to 13 March (1pm to 6pm, Friday and Saturday)

Joining them on this journey during art week is local staple Dawn Ng, Vietnamese conceptual artist, Tuan Mami who explores the dichotomy between art and the social process; and Mike HJ Chang whose work dissects spaces where the public and private intersect. There will also be workshops by NY-based Recharge Foundation, founded by Lorin Gu, executive board member of the New York Foundation of the Arts and a board member of the China Academy of Arts.
