Queensway Shopping Centre, Haven For Sportswear And Printing Needs, Headed For En Bloc

Queensway Shopping Centre, the fading complex known for its sneaker stores and printing services, is slated for en bloc sale.

The mall and its adjacent housing apartment, Queensway Tower, have begun the en bloc sale process, reported Malay-language outlet Berita Mediacorp.

Located diagonally across a junction from Swedish fast furniture store IKEA and Park Hotel Alexandra, Queensway Shopping Centre predates both buildings, having opened in 1976.

Berita Mediacorp reported that residents of the 78-unit Queensway Tower and the 150-odd shop owners of Queensway Shopping Centre convened for a special general meeting on the weekend of Apr 13, the first time a general meeting of this scale was held.

Speaking to Berita Mediacorp, one shop owner, who has been at the mall for the past 26 years, said he was open to the idea of a sale, as business has been poor for year due to declining customer footfall.

Business in the area could have been stretched thin by the glut of malls in the vicinity, like Anchorpoint and the four-year-old Alexandra Central Mall. Located beside IKEA, the Alexandra Central Mall, completed in December 2014, occupies the plot where the former Bukit Merah SAFRA Clubhouse once stood.

The six-storey Alexandra Central Mall made headlines earlier this year, when leaked closed-circuit television footage showed a woman injured by a falling glass door in the carpark of the mall.

According to Queensway Shopping Centre’s website, the mall is one of Singapore’s earliest multi-purpose shopping complexes. With its many sportswear and sneaker stores, the four-storey mall came to be known as “Singapore’s Sports Mall”, a moniker it has held for 43 years.

Designed in a modern architecture style (for its time, at least), the mall is characterised by its octagonal facade and sunken central concourse. Units located near the concourse feature display windows across two levels.

As the en bloc process typically takes up to two years to be finalised, longtime tenants like printing services store Ultra Supplies are not concerned about relocating.

“Oh, that one still long (time away),” said a staff member to Popspoken. “Don’t worry!”
