Dan Lam’s Organic Sculptures Balance Beauty and Discomfort

AUTHOR

Ever wondered how an excessively beautiful sculpture looks like? Dan Lam, 36, is a contemporary artist raised in America, born in Philippines and with Vietnamese descent, lauded for her ability to captivate audiences, presents this in the form of unconventional yet deliciously decadent sculptures. The works are indulgent for the eyes, though you cannot eat them, yet – it is a possibility that the artist has not ruled out at present.

Celebrated for her signature style that combines arresting beauty with an unsettling edge, Lam creates mesmerizing, neon themed works inspired by organic forms and synthetic materials. Her pieces, which subvert the traditional notion of ‘pretty things’, often evoke a range of emotions in viewers, from awe to slight discomfort, blending vibrant colors with intricate textures.

Drawing from her diverse experiences and influences, such as cake making and inspired by natural processes that she observes in her surroundings, Lam’s art challenges traditional boundaries, offering viewers an immersive experience that explores the interplay between the familiar and the alien.

Her latest exhibit, GUTTATION, showcased at Hashimoto Contemporary, continues to push these creative boundaries, showcasing her innovative approach to sculpture.

Popspoken: What is unique about Dallas, your hometown, apart from the rest of the states in America, and how has the locale inspired your creations?

Dan Lam: Dallas is a vibrant city that blends traditional Texan roots with a burgeoning contemporary art scene. The city’s dynamic energy and diversity have been a constant source of inspiration for me.

Growing up in Dallas, I was exposed to a mix of urban and natural environments, which sparked my fascination with contrasting elements. This blend of influences can be seen in my work, where I often juxtapose organic forms with synthetic materials, creating pieces that feel familiar and alien.

Popspoken: From being a cake decorator to a career artist, how did that shift take place, and do you have any plans to create edible art?

Dan Lam: Cake decorating was my first job at 16, so it was born out of necessity rather than passion. But I couldn’t have predicted that it would inform my work the way that it does now!

While decorating cakes, I honed my skills in working with different textures and colors, which later translated into my sculptural work. The precision and creativity required in cake decorating are evident in my approach to sculpture. It taught me the importance of detail and the power of visual appeal, which are crucial elements in my current practice. I don’t have any plans to create edible art, but it’s always been something I wanted to explore for immersive exhibitions.

Popspoken: Share with us your latest work, as well as the new elements that you have incorporated.

Dan Lam: My latest work explores the interplay between organic growth and synthetic intervention. I’ve been incorporating more intricate textures and experimenting with new materials to push the boundaries of my usual forms. While they’re all experiments and nothing is finalized – one piece I’m particularly excited about features a vibrant, undulating surface that almost seems to pulse with life.

Popspoken: Your sculptures often evoke both awe and slight disgust, as well as using complementary forms, such as yin and yang. How do you balance these contrasting emotions in your work?

Dan Lam: Balancing contrasting emotions in my work is a deliberate process. I aim to create pieces that evoke a visceral response, blending beauty with an unsettling quality. This duality is inspired by the concept of yin and yang, where opposing forces are interconnected and interdependent. By carefully selecting colors, textures, and forms, I create a harmonious tension that draws viewers in and encourages them to explore their reactions. It’s about finding that sweet spot where fascination and discomfort coexist.

Popspoken: As a social media influencer, how do you balance your online presence with your art practice?

Dan Lam: Balancing my online presence with my art practice involves time management and authenticity. Social media is a powerful tool for connecting with my audience and sharing my creative journey, but keeping it from overshadowing the actual art-making process is essential. I set aside specific times for social media engagement, allowing me to stay focused on my work. Additionally, I strive to be genuine in my posts, sharing the finished pieces and the behind-the-scenes process.

Popspoken: What role does social media play in your interaction with your audience and the reception of your work?

Dan Lam: Social media plays a significant role in how I interact with my audience and how my work is received. It allows me to reach a global audience, receive immediate feedback, and engage in meaningful conversations about my art. I can showcase my process through platforms like Instagram, share inspirations, and connect with other artists and art enthusiasts. This interaction is invaluable, as it provides insights into how my work resonates with different people and helps build a supportive and engaged community around my art.

Popspoken: How do you engage with the local art community in New York and beyond?

Dan Lam: Engaging with the local art community in New York and beyond is essential for my artistic growth. I participate in gallery exhibitions, attend art fairs, and collaborate with other artists and institutions. These interactions provide opportunities for learning, networking, and gaining new perspectives. Being part of a vibrant art community fosters creativity and opens up new possibilities for collaboration and innovation.
