Having gone solo after spending eight strong years with iconic local pop group, The Sam Willows, Sandra Riley Tang (aka RRILEY) has recently launched “Mmm bye” that encourages people to let go of things that don’t serve them anymore.
The songstress who has a strong yoga practice had been recently enlisted as a judge for TikTok’s All-Star Southeast Asia 2019 which drew over 302,000 submissions and is a platform to incubate upcoming, fresh curators.
“Fueled by the rise of mobile as a key device for content consumption along with the short attention spans of today’s consumers, short-form videos have become one of the preferred formats for expression, particularly among the mobile-savvy audience,” said Doreen Tan, User and Content Operations Manager, TikTok.

TikTok’s phenomenal rise in the seven last years is a result of short-form videos taking centrestage as one of the top 3 content formats that inspire creativity among youth. It is currently owned by ByteDance, currently valued at USD 79 billion and has acquired other similar short-form video platforms such as Musical.ly, following which, all profiles were merged onto TikTok.
Popspoken: How does a normal day look like?
RRILEY: I wake up, clean and feed my dog, cat, bird and duck and then I either have meetings, media interviews, recording, rehearsals, events, train and do some Brazilian Jiu jitsu at NeueFit or do absolutely nothing and binge watch some Netflix or Apple TV.
Popspoken: What are the top 3 apps you use in your creative work?
RRILEY: TikTok is currently one of my new favourites – it has made short-form video creation super fun. From 15 to 30 second videos, you can literally do anything you want, get creative and share your video with the world. There are always new challenges and trends, so you’ll never get bored. VSCO and Snapseed are a must for me for colouring photo and video. Voice Memos are so important to me for recording song ideas on the go.

Popspoken: What is the biggest challenge you face as a creative in Singapore?
RRILEY: If anything, perhaps because we’re such a small country, the opportunities are also limited.
Popspoken: What is your biggest creative pet peeve?
RRILEY: Personally, for myself it’s being overly critical of my work to a point that I don’t put anything out. That annoys me so much.
Popspoken: Do you have any advice for aspiring creatives?
RRILEY: Do not be afraid of failure. Do not be afraid to trash ideas. Do not be afraid to show the world your works in progress and never stop creating.
Popspoken: Where do you go and what do you do for inspiration?
RRILEY: I enjoy resetting in the midst of nature or sometimes I find inspiration from the strangest parts of the internet.
Popspoken: Favourite travel destination and why.
RRILEY: Ecuador and Galapagos! I was just there a few weeks ago it was amazing, people are friendly, food is great, animals and nature everywhere.
Popspoken: Is there anything you want to promote?
RRILEY: Currently working on a special release of a collaboration with a regional artist on ‘Mmm bye’ and working on completing the EP! Also, I’m so excited to share that I’m a judge on TikTok’s first-ever regional talent competition, TikTok All-Star Southeast Asia 2019. If you haven’t gotten on TikTok you 100% should, whether you’re posting your own content or just viewing others, it’ll be 100% entertaining.
Popspoken: How would you like to be remembered?
RRILEY: As the one who took the road less travelled and made it.
