A photo shoot sans stylist, sans brand collaborations, sans a clear message is a sure way to drive any editor of print publications up the roof.
Zhi Wei, however, deliberately opted to take that path and embraced the free-flowing creative process by allowing his subjects to be one with themselves. They were to turn up for a shoot in anything they were comfortable in.
Zhi Wei is all about pushing the boundaries of the medium. His insatiable thirst to hone his photography skills has landed him in coveted roles; such as the contributing photographer of NYLON’s street style and an undergraduate at the Parsons The New School of Design (NYC).
Documenting the ins-and-outs of his glorious days in the States, Zhi Wei took a a leap of faith and allowed a modelling agency free reign to select models for his independent project that spanned 30 days. Personalities were not dumbed down, but embraced. As a result, a quirky, eclectic mix of intriguing personalities shines through. In fact, Paige Hall (featured image), is dubbed as a face to watch in the fashion sphere – she’s 15, but will surely be cast in prominent campaigns when she turns legal.
Zhi Wei’s summer adventures are chronicled in #30daysofZ, a book designed by Sher Chew (Parsons, 2014), with a limited print run of 100. It was launched at The Refinery, 115 King George’s Ave on 17 December 2014.
