Liverpool FC Legends will be in Singapore at the Jalan Besar Stadium on 15 November for a friendly match against the Singapore Ex-Internationals, and football fanatics will be stoked to know that the Liverpool retirees are not about to underestimate the Singapore Ex-International team.
Masters Football Asia (MFA) and Castlewood Group announced that prolific goal scorer, Ian Rush, will feature in The Castlewood Group Liverpool Masters this November.
Rush, who holds numerous club records for Liverpool, will take on the role of player-manager for the Liverpool FC Legends and is expected to play in his favoured position, as a striker, in their match against the Singapore Ex-Internationals. This will be the first time the Kop legend will play alongside fellow Liverpool FC legends in a 11-a-side full field match.
Fellow Reds legend, Patrik Berger was in Singapore yesterday for the event’s press conference. Popspoken spoke to Berger about the upcoming friendly with our local team, and also thoughts on the recent departure of Liverpool’s vice-captain Daniel Agger.
Popspoken:Â What are your thoughts on playing alongside Ian Rush in Singapore?
Berger:Â Ian is one of my top footballing heroes and I’m excited to be playing alongside him for the first time ever. Many in the legends team have played Singaporean opponents in previous years’ 6-a-side tournaments so it will be thrilling to see how we fare against Singapore’s legends in a full-field match!
Popspoken: Daniel Agger was one of Liverpool’s key players for almost a decade. Do you have any comments about him leaving Liverpool?
Berger: I was quite surprised they let him go because Liverpool is not as strong at the back as they could be. He’s still a great, great player and I think he could still do a very good job for Liverpool. But obviously there was something behind the scenes, I don’t know what, that the manager decided to let him go. It’s disappointing but I’m sure he’ll still be a great player back in his national team.
Popspoken:Â How prepared are you and your team for the upcoming match?
Berger: We’re just gonna meet here in Singapore couple of days before the game. It shouldn’t be a problem getting prepared for the game, we’ve been playing football all our lives. Obviously we’re not coming over here just to enjoy the parties and stuff like that, we’re also here to entertain and put up a good game against a strong Singaporean team.
