We recently re-discovered The Pelican an intimate dining lounge located at the heart of CBD, that whips up fresh catches of the day in a variety of cooking styles. Aside from their popular selection of deck food, also known as ‘bar bites’, that is served with a gamut of decadent cocktails, their sit-down menu is delicious too.
Pictured above is the iconic Pelican Platter ($128, serves 2 to 3), which features a plethora of fresh raw oysters, clams, mussels, poached prawns, a crab and a steamed Maine lobster stuffed with lobster tomalley.
After stuffing ourselves silly with the sweet flesh of the fresh seafood, we got to try the The Baked Snapper Pie ($38). The Baked Snapper Pie is fondly known as a dish for rainy days, shitty days, post break-ups days (to quote Ms Na) or any day where things just don’t go your way. The mushrooms, asparagus, all thrown into a steaming, creamy cauldron, is simply divine.
The Pelican’s head chef, Isaac Tan lends his extensive knowledge of wood fire grill and seafood, which was the result of his eight years of experience in Sydney. Together with Dan Segall (Group Executive Chef of The Big Idea, which has The Pelican under its umbrella of restaurants), the duo aims to use sustatainable seafood that is fresh and to inspire diners with their timeless cooking methods. The chefs are all about the feeling of “homeliness”, and encourage diners to share their food with their loved ones, so everyone can try more from the menu.
For appetizers, the gem on the menus was definitely the sweet yet tangy Black Peppered Candied Bacon ($14), that is dubbed the Angmoh “Bakkwa”. Garnished with brown sugar and lime, our appetites were whet by the time we got to another another of our favourites.. The Old Fashion Crab Cakes ($22) is made from succulent flesh peeled straight out of the crab.
The Pelican’s version of the Red Velvet cake is not “Just a Slice of Cake” ($22). It is a luxuriant cake that can feed two or more people, as it is larger than the size of our respective faces.
Aside from the glorious dine-in menu replete with fresh seafood picks, The Pelican‘s bar has a one-for-one happy hour from 3pm till 8pm. We strongly suggest that you try their signature Mojito ($16), which they have modeled after the original Draque Mojito that’s based on a 16th century Carribean drink. They offer one of the largest selections in Singapore with 10 refreshing flavours (lychee, pineapple and more) — you name it, they have it.
Stay on for post-dinner drinks, and you will see the restaurant transform into The Pelican Supperclub, where you can imbibe for good value (Veuve Clicquot Yellow Brut champagne at $108 per bottle)Â and get pumped with sassy beats and funky lights. All this happens from 10pm onwards. Now, let’s cheers to that.
