A Crab-tastic Time at 1 Market

Time seemed to stop at 1 Market. From the moment we stepped into the warmly lit restaurant, it was clear that we were in for a treat.

Rows of food lined the huge restaurant, and the aroma of different spices rolled around in the air. If you’re a crab lover, this latest offering by award winning Malaysian celebrity Chef Wan for the month of September is perfect for you.

Located in the heart of Plaza Singapura, the restaurant’s central location, coupled with its extensive selection of crabs, make it a must go for any self-professed crab lover. (Special note for our Muslim readers: The restaurant is also halal certified!)

With four main themes, namely their Asian wok-fried, cold seafood, salad and Japanese, crab lovers will be spoilt for choice at 1 Market.

At the media tasting, we got chance to try the restaurant’s crowd favourites, such as the Salted Egg Crab and the Black Pepper Crab. When we finished picking out our choice pieces of Salted Egg Crab and Black Pepper Crab – in example, the pincers! This is one advantage of buffet style crab eating, instead of your usual ala-carte/restaurant food item, for we got to choose our favourite portion of the crab.

We could see at once why this station was a crowd pleaser. The Salted Egg Crab was covered with a layer of savoury golden sauce, and the Black Pepper Crab had with it its signature dark sheen that proved to be just as lips-smackingly good as it was messy.

1 Market Chili Crab

With the delicious sauce from the black pepper crab still on our fingers, we did not miss a beat as we made a beeline for their cold seafood counter, and found the highly popular flower crab and snow king crab.

To keep up a “balanced” diet, we headed over to their salad bar, which was infused with crab, of course! We indulged in the Crabmeat with Avocado Salad, as well as the Glass Noodle Crabmeat Salad with Lime Leaves.

Other dishes of note were their Softshell Crab Maki and their Oden Hotpot Soup with Crab Stick. The Softshell Crab Maki was a delightful combination of a crispy softshell crab, which contrasted well with the soft rice.

Come to 1 Market if you’re a crab lover, but be prepared to throw your diet out of the window and into sea. We also recommend bringing lots of wet tissues and for the daring- a bib, because trust us, you will need them.
