It is not everyday you get your salad prepared at Duxton Hill’s Tippling Club by a professional chef.
And it is not everyday you get to be on the other side of the table, watching MasterChef Australia’s top judge George Calombaris arrange asparagus strips and fried kale above a soft green bed of beans and fragrant ocean-fresh abalone bits, creating delectable plate art with the finishing drizzle of oil and a dash of magic green powder.
Was George stressed? He admitted he was. Were we hungry? We admitted we were.
Organised by Lifetime to announce the premiere of MasterChef’s sixth season, we were treated to a gourmet selection of finger food (our favorites include the black pepper crab, or the infamous “black berry”, on Instagram) and the final leafy product of George’s live demonstration. While we are hardly huge fans of eating our greens on any other day, the kale salad did a fine job tempting us to where the grass was way greener.
George also shared his fascination with the Asian food culture, especially fried buns (the man tohs usually paired to chili crab) that he will be bringing back to his own restaurants. It was no surprise then that the chili crab won the fan-polled local food tasting selection against chicken rice and fried carrot cake with egg.
“I can’t wait to share my passion for food with everyone, get a taste of the local dishes and soak in the local culture. To me, food is family, family is life, and life is everything,” George shared. We hear you, George — food is everything.
MasterChef Australia Season 6 aires on Lifetime (StarHub TV Ch 514), weeknights at 7pm and 11pm.
