The Singapore Grand Prix 2019 weekend has rolled into town, just like the haze.
And while it has absolutely nothing to do with makeup, the annual event brings with it a flurry of star-studded race parties (and correspondingly glitzy hangovers) that attending them all has become a sport in its own right.
Whether you’re hoping to get cosy with the race driver of your dreams or kidnapped by friends for #justonedrink, we’ve compiled a list of F1-inspired looks that will set you apart from the sea of generic bodycon-clutch-stiletto wearing revellers.
In a rush? Our speed round version gets you the look in the time taken for a lap round the track: 1.5 minutes. No excuses.
A bold red lip on an otherwise bare face (see featured image) is like revving a sports engine at a crowded traffic junction. Completely unnecessary but immensely satisfying if you have the chops to pull it off. Plus, you’re not actually revving a sports engine at a crowded junction so nobody’s going to call you a jerk.
For precision, clean up any lines with a cotton bud dipped in makeup remover. Add your favourite mascara (we love the Maybelline Lash Sensational , available at Watsons).
Speed Round: Apply a red stain to lips with fingers or a fluffy eye brush, blend with lip balm then kill it with a clear iridescent gloss like this one from Fenty Beauty.
Pink says you’re down to party. But we think you should really be leaving your late teens-tequila train days far behind you in the dust, just like your competition.
Swap out the bright neons for a sophisticated metallic sheen that lets everyone know how far you’ve come, and that you’re the fun person who sends themselves home at the end of the night.
It basically says you play hard, but with your inside voice.
How To: The beauty of metallics is that you really don’t need to get precious or precise – just pop em onto the eye to illuminate and define at the same time.
Try the See-Quins Glam Glitter Shadows from Marc Jacobs because they’re delicious and idiot-proof with maximum payoff. Finesse with a light hand of mascara and brow gel.
Speed Round: Only use fingers. Finish off with a touch of Glossier’s Cloud Paint or any cream blush on the cheeks and lips to keep it modern.
Scuderia Toro Russo
Red and blue combinations never fail to remind us of Speed Racer and dairy product packaging. But in the right hands, they make you look like you just stepped off an editorial and right onto the dance floor. It’s not for the faint-hearted but hey, if haven’t skipped past this look by now, you’re in it to win it.
How To: Keep it wearable and grounded with deeper hues of these colours and apply as your heart desires. Why stop there? Opt for an electric blue if you feel funky.
Pat McGrath’s dizzying arsenal of eyeshadow palettes were made for moments like these. For a pro touch, run Urban Decay’s technicolor array of 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencils (in Roxy and Torch) along the top and bottom waterline. Serious lashings of black mascara mandatory.
We concede: yellow’s a tough one. It’s the colour of caution tapes, wasps and…toolboxes. Mean things and machines. But it need not always be that way.
We also distinctly remember you making resolutions to try something new this year – well, it’s the last quarter of 2019 and we’re waiting.
How To: Keep it wearable by pairing with softer shades of lilacs, pinks or warm earth tones like what celebrity makeup artist Lisa Eldridge has done with Cara Delevigne above. Viseart’s Petite Pro 5 Soleil palette should do the trick with the brand’s signature rich, blendable textures.
Speed Round: Dust Fenty Beauty’s Killawatt Highlighter in Trophy Wife on high planes of the face, take a small pencil brush and intensify the gleam in your inner corners. Pair with a neutral lip like these ones from Nudestix.
Channel high-society Sicilian goddess with $10 in your bank account. They might even let you into the VIP spectator area if you play your cards right, which means air-conditioning and a potential opportunity to meet your sugar daddy.
As they say – dress for the job you want, not the job you have. Treat us later.
How To: Dark lips tend to make your lips look small. So cheat your lip line with an appropriate lip pencil, and invest in a good oxblood (we know, just say plum) lipstick. Burberry Beauty unsurprisingly has it here, and boy oh boy do they have classy makeup.
Oh and whatever you do, stay away from the mattes.
Speed Round: None, because we keep our eye on the prize. A lusciously wine-stained pout separates the amateurs and those who are willing to work for their dreams. And in life, we pick our battles.
See you at the finish line!
