Sportswear-inspired fashion is not dying anytime sooon, not if Swedish fast-fashion brand H&M can help it.

The brand’s new Spring/Summer 2014 collection promises an injection of the sports trend that has permeated catwalks, even going into a more serious sportswear line. Popspoken got a preview of what’s to come at the H&M showroom, located just a few floors above its Singapore flagship at Orchard Building.

Womenswear this coming season is set to mix grunge attitude with bohemian chic. Think frilly white blouses in chiffon and graphic-printed jackets and leggings. Patchwork suede jackets combine with floor-length cotton voile dresses.  The boho-street look is best exemplified in a denim crop jacket with flower embroidery on the back.

This season’s pants come with a zip slit at the front for a slight kick and flare at the bottom should the wearer choose to unzip. What is sure to be a fashion moment in this collection is the tassel pullover ($449). With layers and layers of blue tassels attached to a jersey tunic, this look may not go down well in Singapore weather but is perfect for a chilly day in the mall.

In accessories, charmbracelets and chunky moon-star earrings provide whimsical touches. Stone column rings and embroidered belts look set to be hot items this coming spring. We didn’t spot much skirt options for the SS14 preview though, save for black frilly boyshorts and a white mini-skirt with faux diamond tassels hanging from the hem.

For menswear, the sport element relaxes the tailoring mainstay that H&M’s mens line is known for. We love the addition of the nature-print parka with jacket lapels; this comes with its own pair of printed shorts. Perforation a la dri-fit is also a key look this spring, with the pattern spotted on tees, shirts and jackets. Drawstring trousers, honeycomb-textured sweaters and paisely prints complete the look.

The only accessory for men at the SS14 preview was a black canvas duffel bag which is a good signal of minimalism and the sport-smart mish-mash. That is, unless you fancy getting the new holiday edition of David Beckham’s bodywear line for H&M — his fourth so far. A new hoodie is added to the line because, well, why not?

This season, H&M partnered with Swedish Olympic athletes to launch its new sportswear line for men and women. None of that Lululemon controversy — the leggings are breathable but not see-through. Sports bras are kitted out in vibrant colours while sport jackets have added honeycomb textures to add the fashion in sport. Menswear has a more pastel look, inspired by tennis wear and a smidgeon of Micheal Bastian.

H&M SS14 will premiere in Singapore stores on 6 March 2014.
