As you all know, Popspoken has had a spectacular overhaul lately and our team has been working hard to bring newer and better things to the table for our fabulous readers. So, with new beginnings come new blurbs (so to speak). The fashion team at Popspoken are launching an all new weekly Beauty and Style column. Basically, we will be bringing you interesting weekly tidbits in looking good AND feeling good to perk your Mondays up and inspire your week ahead. Expect lots of ‘Hey, I never knew that!’ and ‘I will have to try that out’ laced with ‘OMG I WANT THAT NOW!’ and ‘Oooh pretty!’. So check back here every Monday (or Tuesday, depending where you are in timezone) for a little bit of sugar, spice and fashionably nice!
What inspired our first beauty post was a random chat with my flatmate as we were driving to campus. My flatmate is happily unfashionable (and it’s the devil-may-care attitude that makes her démodé so fabulous) but she is one of the most wittily sarcastic persons I know. You see, it’s what I call an accidental muse — I bounce crazy, random ideas off her and she comes up with genius one-liners in response that somehow click with the creative elves in my mind — because that’s how Art is created, right?
So, to start with a cliche: What is beauty?
I’m not going to get all philosophical here because we ARE running a Beauty column and beauty is, afterall, not just skin deep, so I will just cut straight to the chase. In my younger days, beauty to me was Covergirl, Maybelline and caked-on make –up that covered imaginary skin ailments subliminally imposed on our psyche by countless skincare advertisements. And then I came to terms with imperfection (and also because memes tell us that there is no such thing as ugly people, only lazy people). Beauty to me, now, is leaving the house without make up on and not feeling uneasy or exposed. Beauty to me is appreciating the little things in life that I used to take for granted (like cake and pie.) that do not stand the test of time. Beauty is learning to laugh at yourself and with yourself because your flaws are not meant to be taken seriously.
So we’re not going to talk about make-up products, hair tutorials or skin care regimes in our first beauty post. We are bringing you beauty from the street. Real beauty from real people. Our team worked together to collate an album of beautifully bare and meaningful memes for you, our readers, to see that there is more than just make-up, botox and crazy diets to the word ‘beauty’.
