The Justin Yap woman is strong, classy and confident. His label is characterized by striking colours and exquisite lines and form.

Skii got a chance to speak to this rising star of the Malaysian fashion scene when he came to town for 20byTWO, a fashion extravaganza held at the Red Dot Museum from 6th to 8th of September. Justin Yap is a name to watch out for, as he bagged the Malaysian International Fashion Award’s “Best Evening Wear Designer” award in 2005.

Trained under fashion couturier Carven Ong, he started his foray into fashion after being inspired by his grandmother who adored sewing. From the tender age of 12 when he first picked up the needle and thread, he knew that designing was going to be his pride and joy.

Justin’s clientele is composed mainly of expatriates who have a keen eye for fashion. Tailoring is particularly appealing for women who have a body shape that is not normally catered for in-store clothes. It is irrelevant if the woman is plus-sized, because with Justin’s meticulous eye for detail, he will make any woman feel comfortable with their body type and shine with his brand of specially constructed dresses. Social media provides a boost in his sales because he uses Facebook to communicate with his clients on a regular basis. From Justin’s perspective, having a comfortable relationship with his clients is important in service industry as building of rapport will allow him to understand their fashion needs better, and tailor clothes that suit their varied personalities. Sustaining a designer label is no easy feat, as it is heavily reliant on maintaining customer satisfaction. To this end, Justin Yap’s attention to details and personable touch keeps his clients coming back for more when they need dresses for special occasions.

Justin’s shoe line is undergirded by the idea of affordable luxury and he places an emphasis on comfort. For a couple of hundred dollars, you can own a pair of Justin Yap’s soles which are exclusively designed and not mass produced. Definitely a reasonable price to pay for quality design and exquisite materials such as python and lamb skin.

One of the more memorable and heartfelt moments in his career was when his client slipped into one of his creations and tears started flowing because she just felt that the dress was simply perfect her. From then on, he came to a realization that his job was not only to make women look pretty, but to make them look beautiful from the inside and out.
