The Henderson Project: The Warehouse Party Comes To Singapore

Secret event missives, cabbing to far-flung areas away from manufactured glitz and glam, stepping into a creaky cargo lift, through a nondescript door and off you go — into a world where only those in-the-know are rocking it out.

The warehouse party concept is indeed an alluring one and one that has begun to find its footing here in Singapore amid a landscape of manicured to-do lists and pristine locales. Favoured by a populace that intends to distance themselves with the average man (or what Tumblr likes to call “basic bitches”), it is a space stripped of identifiers and crowded instead by ambition, freedom and good vibes.

What Present Purpose honcho Tracy Phillips calls “raw and underground” — The Henderson Project is a collaboration between theatre company Dream Academy’s space in Henderson Industrial Park, and Present Purpose’s thoughtful curation of music, movies and art for a lot craving for new experiences. (You might remember A Curious Teepee formerly at *scape, which is the brainchild of Tracy.)

And before you start doubting the viability of such a concept, the project’s debut night on Feb 7 sold out all three showings of the Asia premiere of documentary “Our Hobby Is Depeche Mode” before an after-party at the stroke of midnight with visuals provided by Non-Aligned’s M/SF/T (that’s spelt Misfit) and tunes from DJ Aldrin and DJ KFC sent partygoers well into the night.

The project intends to do the same with their next music bash, aptly titled “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised”. Among spoken word performances (the one we caught at the media preview by Marc Nair was severely impactful), performances by artistes Benjamin Kheng, ShiGGa Shay, L.A.B. and Michaela Therese are set to carry on into the night.

Following which, seven-piece East London band Lazy Habits perform their one-night-only live debut in Singapore, with their addictive mix of big-band, jazz and funk. The band just dropped their teaser to second album The Atrocity Exhibition, so expect to hear new music, if newness is a value you hold dear. DJ Matteblacc swanks into the twilight hour with an after-party of delicious mixes from his repertoire.

It is the debut of events like this that clearly show how society has indeed matured. To more bashes with an attitude.
