Swinging into the Festive Season with Jazz Maestro Jeremy Monteiro

Jeremy Monteiro has become a household name in Singapore’s jazz scene, having been hooked to the “spontaneity of jazz”. He turned professional at the tender age of 16 and at one point event ran a recording studio.

Not only that, he also helms the position of President in the Singapore Jazz Association and is also a fellow of the London College of Music and a Visiting Professor of the University of West London.

After breaking to the world stage at the Montreux Jazz Festival, Jeremy was subsequently spotlighted and was awarded the prestigious Cultural Medallion Award in 2002. Even to date, the legend is building upon the close camaraderie between jazz musicians.

At his peak, Jeremy did up to 280 gigs a year, often travelling to festivals in the region to perform. This Christmas, he will be warming the hearts of many at his gig Jazzy Christmas 2014 this Saturday. Expect not only a stimulation of the senses, but a “stimulation on an intellectual, emotional and spiritual (not to be mistaken with religious) level.”

Trained classically, Jeremy has gained a worldwide following but the highlight of his career was when he was invited to BB King’s Club in NYC, and played alongside the late legendary jazz saxophonist James Moody.

“I have invited many great legends to play with me, but being asked to go the Mecca of jazz to play with them, that was my proudest moment.” – Jeremy

Outside of his music career, Jeremy enjoys the simple pleasures such as unwinding by catching up on his favourite TV serials or riding his bike through Bishan Park.

Looking to the future, Jeremy hopes for collaborative opportunities with James Taylor. And if he had all the money in the world, he has a lofty ideal – to “go back to music school and fill in all the gaps in my information.. Then [he] would buy a house on the hill overlooking the ocean and fit it with my dream recording studio complete with a lovely Yamaha concert grand.”

Spoken like a true music aficionado.
