We at Popspoken are always stoked when we hear amazing news of talents from our country making it big.
So when we heard that YouTube star Troye Sivan’s chart-topping debut single Happy Little Pill was co-produced and co-written by a Singaporean, we just had to share this awesome news with you.
The man in question is Tat Tong, a songwriter and producer who is the only Singaporean to be signed and managed by Universal Music Publishing in Los Angeles.
In multiple Facebook posts, Tat Tong expressed gratitude and excitement towards the single’s release.
“I spent the past 2 days in a shocked daze, tried to get back to normalcy by working on music (and failed miserably), and alternated between bouts of excitement and moments of almost wishing it would end – as each metric and news article piled in, social media and my phone lit up, and the nonstop craziness got too much to bear,” he said.
“I’m very much aware that this unprecedented event will make a great case study to inspire Singaporean creatives, and I’m keen to continue my efforts in this vein,” he elaborated.
Tat Tong shared on Facebook that he moved to Los Angeles a year ago after a solid track record producing for Asia musicians in Singapore. He initially was unsure of his prospects, but is happy that he has settled down and met his professional goals. Tat Tong is managed by music executive veteran Jimmy Swan.
Tat Tong has also written for the likes of international artists Amelie and Mack Wilds, as well as Asian artistes Derrick Hoh, Kelly Poon and Show Luo.
Troye Sivan made the announcement for his debut EP at this year’s Vidcon event, flanked by best friend and fellow YouTuber Tyler Oakley. Concurrently with the Vidcon announcement, his debut single was released and pre-orders for his EP, TRXYE, were available on his website.
The single shot straight to the top position on the Billboard Trending 140 chart mere hours after it debuted. Happy Little Pill also went to the top position on Singapore’s iTunes chart. Troye’s EP placed first in 17 countries on iTunes and hit the top ten in 40 countries.
