Robin Thicke Liberates Blurred Lines, One Foam Finger At A Time at MTV World Stage

To say Canadian–American R&B pop singer Robin Thicke’s life has been ordinary since his hit single ‘Blurred Lines’ was named, as the top song for the summer by legendary music magazine Billboard would be a remiss. But to sum up everything into just a few hundred words does not do it any justice either; he has meandered through false acquisitions and grappled with questions far too familiar to most musicians for that. But when you’re the son of an iconic actor, comedian, songwriter, and composer Alan Jeffery Thicke and his equally talented wife, Gloria Loring – breaking into showbiz and owning it isn’t exactly going to be pedestrian.

We managed to get the chance to speak to Robin at a press conference before his performance as the headliner of MTV World Stage Live in Malaysia concert in Selangor on Sunday. The line-up for the evening also featured hit K-Pop group EXO, Malaysia rapper Joe Flizzow and ‘dirty bass’-dropping American hip-hop/electronic music quartet Far East Movement.

Thicke, who is very much family-oriented, managed to make the room giggle by recollecting on memories of how his 3-year-old son, Julian, would often drop by his in-house music studio to check up on daddy. In fact, both Robin’s wife, actress Paula Patton, and son Julian Thicke were featured in his album. Go easy on yourself and take a listen to ‘Ain’t No Hat 4 That’ and ‘Take It Easy On Me’.

The man behind the chart-topper would much rather pick receiving a multi-platinum album over a Grammy and 10 million fans. Why? The 36-year-old replied matter-of-factly, “I will definitely take the multi platinum album because that means you have fans.”

Staying true to himself, Robin is no short of keeping his music honest, adding, “Credibility is all about perception. Some people think it’s the best thing in the world, while other don’t get it at all. I think the most important thing is that you are selling records and people are listening to your music.”

“Miley and I knew exactly what were doing at the awards. It’s the MTV VMA’s you know, it’s the place of shock and awe, a place to provoke,” he coolly replied when probed about life after his raunchy and literally jaw-dropping performance at the recent MTV Video Music Awards with young pop sensation, Miley Cyrus. (God bless the foam finger.)

When commenting on the equally raunchy and provocative Blurred Lines video that featured female models dancing semi-nude around Thicke, song co-writer and producer Pharell Williams and rapper T.I., Thicke explains that the idea to have flashing words and naked women all came from visionary and female director, Diane Martel.

The singer-songwriter is undoubtedly a very soulful and passionate singer naming icons such as John Lennon, Bruce Springsteen and Marvin Gaye as inspirations to his writing and music style. However, it is still his high school sweetheart-turned-wife, Paula Patton, who he names his biggest inspiration.

“She is my inspiration and she always told me what women don’t want to see and hear and how a woman wants to be treated,” said Thicke.

Besides a strong support team and his intrinsic talent, Thicke will keep up this music racket, as it is something that he is genuinely good at. “For me, I’m just happy to be getting all this attention because it gives me a chance for people to hear my music. And when I die, the only thing that will matter to me is the music that I left behind, not some performance on MTV that everyone will forget.”
