Guess who got to speak to Andre Barreau who plays George Harrison in The Bootleg Beatles

Hailed “Absolutely authentic!” by the Daily Mail, The Bootleg Beatles is without a doubt the world’s most popular tribute Beatles band. Since their establishment in 1980, The Bootleg Beatles have performed almost 5,000 times all over the world. Recently, they were even invited to perform at Queen Elizabeth’s Golden Jubilee celebration at Buckingham Palace. For the first time ever, The Bootleg Beatles will be performing live in Singapore. Fans of the greatest pop group in history can expect to hear songs such as Eleanor Rigby, Penny Lane, and All You Need is Love, at the Grand Theater, Marina Bay Sands.

We. Are. So. Stoked.

Popspoken speaks to Andre Barreau who plays George Harrison in The Bootleg Beatles.

Q: Which is your favourite Beatles song, and why?

A: So many! From a performance point of view the harmony songs are brilliant to sing – This Boy, Nowhere Man etc. but at the moment I think all the band are enjoying She Said, She Said from Revolver which we are playing in our soundchecks.

Q: How does it feel being compared with the Beatles – do you feel that you are doing their music justice? Do you like being compared to the Beatles?

A: Do you know – we’ve never been asked that question before – seriously!! Of course we can’t be truly compared to The Beatles, as they are creators and originators of that marvellous music, but as great fans and true lovers of The Fab Four do everything we can to be as accurate and faithful to the records when we recreate their songs live on stage.

Q: What is your experience working in the music industry?

A: Well, I’ve been a professional musician for over thirty five years so I’ve seen a lot of changes – when we started The Bootleg Beatles guitar tuners didn’t exist – we used a harmonica to tune from! There were no sampled keyboards so we had ‘a good in-tune upright piano’ on our rider too. Nowadays we can amplify a violin to be as loud as a drum kit and that means in our show we can perform powerful and authentic sounding versions of songs like ‘I Am The Walrus or ‘All You Need Is Love’.

Q: Aside from performing at the Bootleg Beatles, do tell us more about your other musical interests.

A: Well, I’ve been lucky enough to play on a few hit records over the years – ‘Angels’ by Robbie Williams for example – on which I sang and played the slide solo. I also had two songs and appeared in ‘Sliding Doors’ starring Gwyneth Paltrow amongst many other things. I’ve done  soundtracks (notably ‘Dangerous Parking’ -available on iTunes!!)  and have worked with artists like Wreckless Eric and Jackie De Shannon. I love listening to all sorts of music – right now I’m listening to Jaques Brel, The Who and of course The Beatles!
