Indie songstress Russian Red brought the house down at Resort World Sentosa’s Waterfront Studios on 30 September 2012. More than 300 people turned up and packed the cosy studio to the brim. Latecomers were refused entry, so be sure to be on time and to get a good view of future artistes at live recordings of MTV Sessions. Russian Red’s MTV session will be shown tomorrow, on 20 October, so keep a look out for it!
Fans soaked up her 10 song playlist thoughtfully selected for the MTV Sessions. Russian Red opened the 45-min show with “I Hate You But I Love You”, the hit song which skyrocketed her to fame.
They were taken away by hits such as “Everyday Everynight” and a slow acoustic cover of Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Want to Have Fun”. Russian Red worked magic with her guitar to the upbeat tune, “The Sun The Trees”. She sounded hauntingly beautiful as she performed “Tarantino”. Russian Red proceeded to mesmerize the audience with an unplugged rendition of “Loving Strangers”.
I was particularly impressed by her cover of Queen’s “We Will Rock You” as she managed to channel the electricity of the song via drums and her powerful voice. With her flawless vocals, Russian Red effortlessly pulled off her final ballad, “January 14th” to a crowd which erupted in applause.
