They say veterans never die, and truer words have never been spoken for Justin Ang and Vernon A.

The radio deejay duo — termed the “Muttons” — swept the Best Radio Show award at the MediaCorp Radio Awards on November 15 at the MediaCorp TV Theatre. The awards show was televised ‘live’ on MediaCorp’s English free-to-air Channel 5 and honoured the best in MediaCorp’s stable of radio platforms in Singapore’s four national languages.

Justin Ang also won Most Popular Radio Personality (987FM), beating his fellow compatriots such as Rosalyn Lee, Bobby Tonelli and Dee Kosh. Jean Danker and Vernetta Lopez won Most Popular Radio Personality for Class 95FM and Gold 90.5FM respectively, upsetting hot favourites Glenn Ong and The Flying Dutchman respectively.

However, Glenn Ong walked away with the Radio Personality of the Year — Media’s Choice (English Programming). The award is given out by industry insiders to the DJ that garners the most media impact through press buzz, social media buzz and media engagement.

In Malay radio, A B Shaik walked away with two awards: Most Popular Radio Personality (Warna 94.2FM) and Radio Personality of the Year — Media’s Choice (Malay Programming). Hafeez Glamour scored his eighth award for Most Popular Radio Personality (Ria 89.7FM).

Former station-mates Lin Peifen and Zhou Chongqing emerged winners in Chinese radio. While Peifen nabbed Most Popular Radio Personality (Y.E.S. 93.3FM), Chongqing from Love 97.2FM nabbed Radio Personality of the Year — Media’s Choice (Chinese Programming).

In the style factor, Bobby Tonelli and Yasminne Cheng won Most Stylish Radio Personality in the male and female categories respectively. The Lifetime Achievement award was given to Warna 94.2FM’s Suharti Ali, who has spent 36 years in the radio and television industries.

The awards show went into overdrive with a Wrecking Ball spoof opening by The Muttons and a hilarious sketch by Jean Danker who pasted “Listen Until Shiok” stickers — similar to the design style of Samantha Lo’s infamous circular stickers — on the butt of Vernetta Lopez and crotch of her husband Glenn Ong. Performances by Anthony Neely, Nate Tao, Zendee and The Sam Willows also took place during the awards ceremony.

Mr Lawrence Wong, Acting Minister for Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth and Senior Minister of State for Ministry of Communications and Information, was the guest-of-honour for the night. Present during the show was MediaCorp CEO Shaun Seow, radio managing director Florence Lian and celebrities such as Judee Tan, Vandetta and Mark Bonafide.
