#1: Lady Gaga opens the show

2013 MTV Video Music Awards - Show

Quick-change artistry, swift back-up dancers, wind machines and seashell bikini – this performance had it all, and we expect nothing less of her. Although many noticed that she was a little more “normal” (or just about as normal as Gaga can get), there’s no doubt that the highly-anticipated live performance of Applause was a success. Gaga stayed true to her on-screen character by sitting through the show in her seashell bikini outfit – now that’s dedication!

#2: The Taylor Swift double diss

While accepting the award for Best Female Video for “I Knew You Were Trouble”, Taylor decided to let a little nasty out by making this sudden dedication, and we quote: “I also want to thank the person who inspired this song because he knows exactly who he is, because now I’ve got one of these.” Pretty much everyone, (including MTV – I mean they literally panned the camera over to Harry Styles right after the comment. Coincidence? We don’t think so) speculates that the comment was directed towards Harry Styles. It probably doesn’t help that she was seen mouthing what seemed like “Shut the —- Up” to BFF, Selena Gomez, when Harry was on stage.

#3: Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke

This says it all.

#4: The crowd’s faces during Miley Cyrus’ performance of “We Can’t Stop”

While Miley Cyrus was busied herself on stage by twerking, grinding and scampering around Robin Thicke and giant stuffed bears, the crowd just looked, well, bored. As the camera panned across the audience, everybody caught the when-will-this-performance-end expression on Rihanna, the confused looks of One Direction, the damn-girl-there’s-kids-watchin’ expression of the Smith family parents and we also saw Jaden Smith’s eyebrows defy even more gravity than they usually do.

#5: Lady Gaga can add “knight in shining armour” to her ever-growing list of characters and alter-egos

One Direction (predictably) won the Song of the Summer for “Best Song Ever” and the crowd decided to respond with boos. Lady Gaga responded with an encouraging, “You deserve every bit of success that you have” and left the awards saying that she did not want to stick around in such a discouraging environment. We applaud you, Gaga.

#6: Justin Timberlake with his (not-so-surprise) guests

In line with adding the Michael Jackson Vanguard Award to his already-overflowing trophy cabinet, Justin Timberlake took to the stage for an epic 15-minute performance during which ‘N Sync just happened to pop onto stage seemingly out of nowhere (but really, the rumours let the cat out of the bag long ago). The crowd pretty much went nuts (and Rihanna, for once, did not look bored) and it was clear that Justin deserves every award he’s ever received.
