Tabitha Nauser’s Latest EP Draws on Personal Vulnerabilities

Being a singer is something that Tabitha Nauser knew she would be since a young age. The former Singapore Idol contestant and 987fm disc jockey has been on a constant journey to discover which genres of music that speak to her, fine-tune her craft; and being in touch with her emotions has allowed her to do just that. Her new EP, “things i should have said” draws on her personal vulnerabilities in the present year, including leaving her label, Sony Music, and figuring it out on her own.

Popspoken: Your latest EP is strikingly personal. Was that an intention or a result?

Tabitha: This was definitely not intended. ‘things i should have said’ happened as a result of so many things that transpired this year, both good and bad, that I felt the need to have to find a way to process – and I processed through music.

I feel like it’s the most honest I’ve been and I’m hoping people see a side of me that they’ve not seen before – and if it helps someone to feel more open and embrace their own vulnerability, that would be amazing too.

Popspoken: Share with us more about the thought process of using a “polaroid” as template image in your album.

Tabitha: This EP was so personal and so effortless to create, that I wanted the visuals to reflect that. I thought of polaroids because they represent time stamps – a visual marker of a moment in life, never to be replicated again. I liked that concept so much because it could perfectly encapsulate how I was feeling when I put this EP together.

Popspoken: Some people say growth happens at the edge of your comfort zone. Tell us more about your journey as a musician so far.

Tabitha: Amongst the many challenges I’ve faced this year, parting with my label was one of them, and I think this had to be the biggest turning point in my career so far. Did I ever imagine I’d be putting out my first EP as an independent artiste? Of course not. It’s a whole different ballgame and I’m learning to adapt and adjust. I have nothing but love for my old label and team, without them I wouldn’t be in the position I am today. But having this fresh start is so exciting to me, and at the end of the day, if things don’t go the way I want it to, I’ve got no one to blame. I just need to work harder.

Popspoken: How do you overcome writer’s block?

Tabitha: It’s tough because everyone is different. For myself, particularly, I find that giving my ears a rest from the work at hand works best – a couple of days away, just to take a step back and view everything fresh always seems to help. I also like getting people I trust involved as well, people whose opinions I value and whose talent I admire.

Popspoken: What is one thing you want to do less of and one thing you want to do more of in 2020.

Tabitha: I would like to doubt myself less, and be more open with myself and my loved ones in 2020.

Popspoken: What do you look for in a life partner?

Tabitha: Someone who makes me laugh, who is selfless and caring, who has kind words even in the most unkind times, and who is willing to create and have new experiences with me everyday.

Popspoken: What’s your idea of perfect happiness.

Tabitha: Perfect happiness is a myth – there’s no such thing! (laughs) But in all honestly, I think I get pretty close when I’m on stage performing, be it a crowd of 4 people or 40,000 people – I feel so much joy either way.

Popspoken: Care to share some thoughts about the “negative love syndrome” and whether or not it has any impact on your habits in relation to love and relationships.

Tabitha: I’ve actually had to google this! I’ve never heard of it prior, but I can definitely see how this theory applies. Most everything we do does stem from something we’ve learned, so it makes sense that we can unlearn certain behaviours as well. I’d need to deep dive a little more on my past relationships, but once I’ve come up with a conclusion, I’ll hit you up.

Popspoken: In a world of white noise and with constant events to attend, how do you keep grounded and stay focused on your music?

Tabitha: Funny you should ask this – I’ve found that in the last couple of years, I had the habit of filling my time with things/people that didn’t necessarily leave me feeling fulfilled. I’ve put music at my center again, taken a lot of time to really identify my priorities and I’ve felt much better for it.

Popspoken: Do you like listening to the sound of your own voice?

Tabitha: Is it weird if I say yes? (Haha) To be clear – I like the sound of my voice when I sing, but not so much when I speak.

Popspoken: How would you like to be remembered.

Tabitha: As someone who did something worth remembering.
