Bite Sized Beef: Eat Better With October’s New Dining Options

The month following the mooncake season can be a little daunting, especially for those looking to keep their diets in check. But with so many new choices cropping up, how can we practice restraint? This month’s hot spots are curated for those with an appetite to eat not less, but better.

Kohaku Tendon: A Super Fun-gi Autumn

It is easy to see (and smell) why this tendon is adored by many, forming snaking queues that have waiting times of one hour onwards during both lunch and dinner sessions. At Kohaku Tendon, each rice bowl comes generously topped with glistening golden pieces, then drenched in their special home-made sauces, served piping hot and crispy. It has earned its Instagram fame with its alluring appearance, but the killer is the fragrance from the batter that permeates the air surrounding the store.

Inspired by the autumn season in Japan, a new tendon combination featuring seven types of mushrooms (shiitake, maitake, shimeji, enoki, butter mushroom and oyster mushroom), prawns, and Atlantic salmon will be available alongside their menu mainstays. Surprisingly, the tendon is far from greasy. The buttery salmon flavour acts as a nice palate cleanser to the overall earthier components, while the sauce keeps everything together in the bowl — truly an indulgent way to eat cleaner.

Antoinette: Hakka Marries French Flavours

A post shared by Li Tian (@dairyandcream) on

Chef Pang is back again with a new menu that nods towards his heritage: an exciting mix of Hakka and Singapore. This picturesque French restaurant is home to many of his unique creations, but we feel like he has truly outdone himself this time round. Starting with the bread basket’s delectable homemade butters: preserved bean curd, caramelized shallot, rempah and preserved turnips. Like where this is going?

On the new Antoinette menu is Chicken Rice, chicken breast prepared sous-vide style to achieve the tender texture, paired with barley grains cooked with chicken stock and aromatics in place of rice; Spaghetti, a masterful rendition of Hakka oil tossed noodles with homemade pasta, cuttlefish pork belly ragout and ebi sakura; and Hakka Gnocchi “Suan Pan Zi”, which features a kaleidoscopic medley of beetroot, sweet potato, purple sweet potato and yam. Finish off with Sunny Side Up because there is nothing like a devious trick to the senses to perk up after a great meal.

The Hitsuji Club: Leaner Lamb Grill Options

There are many great grill options for beef and pork, but lamb usually falls off the radar. The Hitsuji Club is the first jingisukan specialist restaurant and eating there was a game changer for our attitude towards lamb. For those who are put off by the gamey smell or flavour, the restaurant sources their meat from lambs that are grain-fed for six to eight months only, meaning that the meat is incredibly soft without the stink.

The Premium Jingisukan Set comes with lamb fillet, loin and an assortment of vegetables, and the staff will be around to help with the grilling process. They also will be able to guide you to the best salt option or their homemade sauce to elevate the cut of meat. Other than an all-you-can-eat and/or drink buffet options, they also have very affordable lunch sets from $25 onwards.

There’s nothing like a glass or two after the end of a long day, but what happens when we end a long month?  International wine authority Robert Parker Wine Advocate will be bringing back its Matter of Taste wine event at Grand Hyatt Singapore on 21st October, featuring over 200 iconic wines and an entire line-up of activities.

Kicking off the event will be a five-hour walkabout wine tasting with a focus on Bordeaux and Bordeaux varietals, where the styles of great cabernets-merlots from renowned Bordeaux classified growths contest against each other for the best palette teaser. There will also be a series of masterclasses with winemakers and wine reviewer Joe Czervinski; as well as two themed wine dinners, one exclusively prepared by Chef Haikal Johari of one-Michelin-starred Alma; and the Grande Finale Dinner which will see some of the world’s best winemakers, wine critics and importers in one room with very fine wine.
