Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) hosted its first-ever event in Singapore on 4 January 2014 at Marina Bay Sands, with 5,216 people attending the event. Despite the fact that it offered a card of lesser known fighters, it was not a bad display of fights at all.
In the UFC Fight Night 34 main event, Tarec Saffiedine was able to impress despite not competing in over a year, wearing down Hyun Gyu Lim for a unanimous decision victory.
The last-ever Strikeforce Welterweight champ put on an absolute striking clinic, out striking the bigger man with grace and seeming ease. Lim did manage to hurt Saffiedine at the ending seconds of the last round, but unfortunately for him this was too little too late. With precise striking combinations on the inside and devastating leg kicks, Saffiedine reduced Lim to literally one usable leg from as early as the 3rd round.
Royston Wee also did Singapore proud, with a dominant win over David Galera in the first-ever time a Singaporean has fought in the UFC. With the crowd solidly behind him, he dominated all 3 rounds of the fight with his superior wrestling, and took an easy victory despite enduring an illegal upkick in the 3rd.
“Knockout of the Night” went to the explosive Max Holloway’s defeat of Will Chope, who knocked out the taller, bigger fighter with a flurry of punches in the 2nd half of round 2.
