We are always excited when two behemoths collaborate. MTV Asia, together with Aloft Hotels (“A Vision of W Hotels”) have set up an online platform to promulgate local musical talents. Promising vocalists across China, India, Malaysia and Thailand now have a shot at stardom if they get selected to perform at “Live at Aloft Hotels” which will be held at the hotel’s W XYZ bar.
Before you get lost in the multiplicity of Aloft’s offerings, I must highlight how accessible it is – KL Sentral’s main station and KL Express (which brings you to the airport in 28 minutes) is just a stone’s throw away. No, I mean seriously, the station is just across the road.
Catered to the Generation Y crowd, Aloft Hotels boasts minimalistic, funky metallic furnishings and even houses a dance music in the lobby to keep youths occupied. Unlike some hotel chains which charge for internet usage, Aloft’s guests are welcome to utilize the hotel’s complimentary WIFI-access. Which, by the way, is at breackneck speed.
The series of stylized pop idols by Malaysian talent Kenji Chai is one of the many artworks that fill the walkways and walls of the hotel rooms. Even the 360° service counter has graffiti inspired elements that are changed regularly.
The lovely folks of MTV Asia flew us in to witness the first instalment of “Live at Aloft Hotels” which was hosted by MTV VJ Hanli Hoeffer, featuring the impressive Malaysian duo, The Light Fantastic who belted out familiar tunes such as Titanium with their silky smooth vocals.
The rooms at Aloft are nothing short of impressive. Small details such as the tasteful, vibrant touches of colour, bring out the overall zestiness of the hotel. One knows the design of the hotel is well-thought through, when one discovers that the use of panels in their walk-in-wardobe which is then used for the backing of the beds, is actually patented. How sick is that!
Before we even begin raving about the food, Nook @ Aloft’s use of white and lime green elements in the restaurant’s finishings is an appetizer in itself. Our 3 course meal was kickstarted by the Umai Sushi, Duck Confit with Pomegranate and Yogurt Sphere.
Close your eyes, lose yourself and imagine this: A plate is brought to you with a glass cup inverted over luscious scallops. As you lift the cup, a whish of sauteed scallops fills your nose and a gentle puff of smoke floats out of the glass cup. Sounds amazing? It tasted as good as it looked – the succulence of the fresh scallops were well-complemented with a thin slice of radish and seaweed.
Hear ye, hear ye, the next dish will definitely whet your appetite. Sarawak Laksa is a local favourite, but there’s a twist, the chef has prepared it with organic soba noodles for that extra twang.
The fun doesn’t stop there! Our last dish was the 8 Treasures Ais Kacang which brought out the child in everyone. It’s always more enjoyable when you can control the taste of your food. The syringes that accompanied this dish were filled with flavoured syrup, such as gula melaka, rose infused strawberry, pandan with lemongrass, and cornflakes infused millk – enough to leave the diner spoilt for choice as to which was going to be his / her ‘weapon of choice’ for injection into the pile of ice shavings.
Fun, fabulousnes, frivolity? Check, check, check. It’s no wonder why this 3 course menu won an award at the Malaysia International Gourmet Festival 2013. This special menu is priced at RM 280+ (with alcohol) and RM 180+ (without alcohol).
Once you’re done feasting, shed those extra calories by taking a dip in their Infinity Pool where you can see the Menara (KL Tower) across the horizon. Can’t get enough entertainment? Step over to Mai Bar which has Tiki-totem-esque elements, where you can let loose and be inebriated from dusk till dawn.
