The Projector’s Probably Older Than You, But It’s Still Hip

Think yourself too cool for the likes of Golden Village and Cathay? Bring your hipster self down to Beach Road and plant your behind on one of the seats at The Projector – the coolest cinema in Singapore right now.

The Projector revives two cinema halls and the 5th floor foyer of the historic Golden Theatre as an independent cinema and creative platform that brings together a great selection of films, one-of-a-kind events, versatile spaces, and delectable fare. The Projector comprises two halls (Golden 1 and Golden 2) on the fifth floor that were once the circle seats of Golden Theatre.

Here’s a little backstory for that retro cred: Totalling over 1,500 seats, the Golden Theatre was the biggest cinema in Singapore and Malaysia when it was completed in 1973. Like many other cinemas built in that time, the layout was originally one big movie theatre surrounded by stalls and circle seats. The space was subdivided into three separate halls in the 1990s. Golden Theatre was well patronised for its good quality Mandarin films in the ‘70s and ‘80s, and ‘adult’ artistic films in the ‘90s.

But back to the present: be spoilt for choice with a specially-curated programme that showcases indie, foreign, cult favourites, classics, arthouse, horror, local flicks, retrospectives and special themed nights, all handpicked by the people behind The Projector!

A single screen classic cinema hall with 220 seats, the Green Room is the main screening hall for films curated by The Projector. Besides being redesigned as a versatile events space, the Redrum (that’s pronounced “red room”) will also be the home to Café Cino screenings.

Now Popspoken’s Screen curator Yue Jie is no stranger to the cinema. His reviews have even extended to films screened at the 65th Berlin International Film Festival! Yue Jie’s latest review is on the Golden Bear award-winning film “Taxi Tehran“, a refreshingly meta flick shot through the lens of the filmmaker’s taxi, as he drives around the capital of Iran. Why this clandestine method, you ask? Read his review to find out!

But you definitely wouldn’t be able to catch a screening of “Taxi Tehran” in places like Shaw or even Golden Village Gold Class, what with their mid-movie champagne and all.  Yue Jie viewed the acclaimed flick at The Projector, which prides itself as a “dynamic alternative to the common cineplex”. The Projector’s tongue-in-cheek tone is also reflected on its website, where a screening of Steven Spielberg‘s blockbuster “Jurassic Park” is accompanied with the line “Much better than Jurassic World, we promise”. Also fun to note: they’re screening it right around the premiere of the Chris Pratt-helmed 4th instalment. Cheeky.

So grab your friends, grab your phone (you’ll want some Instagrams), and book your tickets to an alternative screening at The Projector today!
