Popspoken’s Guide to Art Week 2015

The time has come upon us once again to celebrate the weird and the wonderful, the provocative and evocative, the epitome of expression, that is, art. If you haven’t already realised, the Singapore Art Week has made Jan 17 to 25 the ideal period of the year for Singaporean residents and visitors to experience that creative outlet. At a loss for where to go and what to do? Worry not. We’ve rounded up five promising events to fill your week up with.

Branded ever so fabulously as “an all-day quintessential cultural bonanza”, any fool would know this is the place to be on Jan 17, from 2pm. If Super 0’s official website is any indication of the thrills to be expected at the event, then we say, “Gird thy loins!” Don’t miss Mash-Up’s upcycling workshop, or the Alchemy Garden, co-hosted by Edible Gardens and Reyka Vodka, where participants get to experiment with cocktail mixing. For those who prefer to get down with music, minty fresh vinyl courtesy of Curated Records, and wild DJ sets by the likes of The Field, Tim Sweeney and Zig Zach await.

#2: Karaoke Party

Karaoke Party is an interactive film installation featuring the works of local fashion designers and musicians, which will make appearances in the three karaoke clips to be screened. Running from Jan 16 to 25, the exhibition is presented by the folks at Keepers and co-produced by photographer Lenne Chai and filmmaker Ling Ang. More than a visual-aural feast, this’ll challenge and perhaps change your perspective on homegrown talents.

#3: Art Stage Singapore

It wouldn’t be Art Week without the annual festival, where contemporary art pieces from all around the globe congregate in one huge expo. For the fifth in its series, founder Lorenzo Rudolf has brought together 153 exhibitors from 29 countries, of which 34 are local. Spread over four days from Jan 22 to 25, the massive art fair demands comfortable footwear, informative maps, and early birds – otherwise, you’ll never cover the grounds wholly.

#4: APB Foundation Signature Art Prize

One of the island’s most distinguished and prestigious award programmes, the APB (Asia Pacific Breweries) Foundation Signature Art Prize returns in its third instalment with 105 art pieces from the region’s various nations. While five leading authorities forming the judging panel deliberate on potential prize winners, members of the public can view the works of the 15 finalists at the Singapore Art Museum. Sometime military camp Gillman Barracks is a vital venue to include in your must-visit list. Stay up with the cluster of art galleries this Jan 23, from 7pm, for Art After Dark – a recently launched late-night shindig, where night owls and artistic inquisitors meet. Featuring a plethora of art shows, artist talks, gallery tours, jazz entertainment, booze and nosh, there are more than enough avenues and activities to satisfy your cultural cravings with.
