W!LD RICE artistic director and theatre stalwart Ivan Heng has been invited to a state banquet with Queen Elizabeth II with husband Tony Trickett. The state banquet is held in honour of Singapore president Tony Tan Keng Yam and wife Mary Tan, who are on a six-day state visit to the United Kingdom — the first for any Singapore president.
Ivan made this announcement on his Facebook profile Sunday, posting the invite there. He said that he was invited just 12 days after he and husband Tony got married in London.
“My husband and I are very moved and deeply honoured to attend. We do so as proud representatives of Singapore and members of the Singapore arts community,” Ivan said on his Facebook post.
He later wrote in another related Facebook post, “In the grand scheme of things, this is a very great honour commemorating Singapore’s 50th year of independence, as well as our personal journey as a happily married couple.”
“We shall do our very best to make us all proud – of the small but great nation that Singapore is, of the society that we can be.”
President Tony Tan and wife Mary were greeted Monday morning by Singapore’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom Foo Chi Hsia and Viscount Hood, Lord in Waiting on behalf of Queen Elizabeth II.
The President will stay at Buckingham Palace for several nights and is due to address the UK Parliament as well as speak to Singaporeans living and working there.
