Hollywood stars Dave Bautista and Zoe Saldana, along with director James Gunn, are in town this week as part of promotional activities in Southeast Asia for Marvel’s latest movie Guardians Of The Galaxy. Unlike famous hits from the studio that includes The Avengers and Iron Man, this latest superhero outing is nothing like audiences have come to expect.
While the premise also involves heroes that come together to save the world, our “heroes” this time are misfits and outcasts of society – characters with unrecognized talents tasked to join forces. Notice I said characters, because these guys aren’t all human to begin with. Among these are Drax the Destroyer, played by Dave, and Gamora, played by Zoe.
At the press conference Thursday morning, Dave and Zoe had nothing but kind words for the film. Asked for his thoughts on the movie, former wrestler Dave said that though he could fit the physicality of the character well, acting is still intimidating to him and the movie stretched his acting prowess considerably. Also, getting accepted for the role made him break down in tears as it meant so much to him as an actor.
Even wrestlers have a soft side too.
Zoe, on the other hand, had a different perspective. Being the female lead among male-dominated characters, to her, the character represented a role that empowered women. She could not be more delighted playing the green alien, a contrast from the usual blue she sees in Avatar.
The film’s director, James Gunn, was clearly in bubbly spirits. He stated that as the film is about oddballs and people who don’t feel they belong to society, he hopes that after seeing the movie, people can walk out of the theater feeling better about themselves and about the world.
Most importantly, he ended the press conference with kind words for the public:
“At the end of the day, when you feel outcast, remember that there are more of us who feel outcast than there are who don’t. So, we are the majority. Only very few people can tell us what we can’t do.”
As we anticipate the release of the movie, all you Marvel fans are encouraged to head to the red carpet premiere later today to see the stars. Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista and director James Gunn are expected to walk the red carpet Saturday, 12 July 2014 at 6.30PM at Shaw House Orchard Road.
Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy is set to open here on 31 July 2014.
