Pangdemonium’s Fat Pig Teases Big-bottomed Girls

They used to call me “Psychic Girl” back in primary school, 11 years ago. A nickname of sorts it was, but granted, less insulting than that of the lead character in Pangdemonium’s opening production of 2014, Fat Pig.

After a full season of heavy tearjerkers, it is no surprise Tracie Pang chose Neil LaBute’s award-winning Fat Pig, a romantic comedy, to start off the new year. Starring fresh-faced Frances Lee as the lead female, Helen, this play will also be her professional debut in theatre.

At its core, Fat Pig is a love story between two people—Tom (Gavin Yap) and Helen—except Helen is, as you might have guessed, a tad corpulent. Though Tom falls madly in love with his plus-size friend, he isn’t as open about his feelings as the folks at F*** Yeah! Fat Chicks & Skinny Guys. Well, you could imagine why when his best friend, Carter (Zachary Ibrahim), is a misogynist.

While he undergoes drastic measures to keep his bulky secret under wraps, Carter and Jeannie (Elizabeth Lazan), Tom’s on-off girlfriend, snoop into his affairs to discover the inevitable truth.

With a topic so sensitive and a male chauvinist in the story, expect nothing less than a gut-busting show laden with guilt trips and entertainment, both wicked and uncomfortable. Laugh without a guilty conscience—I dare you.
