The Necessary Stage’s ‘Poor Thing’ Tackles Road Rage Head On

As most motorists in Singapore would understand, unruly drivers are a dime a dozen on the roads these days. It comes as no surprise then that many Singaporeans suffer from a bad case of road rage from time to time. The Necessary Stage’s (TNS) 2014 opening production, Poor Thing, gets straight to the heart of this issue by exploring the problems surrounding Singaporeans involved in vehicular accidents.

Understanding how most of us can’t live without Facebook or Twitter nowadays, TNS has also decided to make social media an integral part of the performance. Audience members will be contacted via email and asked to watch a video clip before the performance. This clip will serve as a prelude to the subsequent action on stage.

What’s more, you’ll now have a legitimate reason to be using your mobile phone during the show. Videos will be uploaded to Facebook during the show itself, and audiences are free to give their two cents worth by posting comments online.

And if that’s not a good enough reason to catch Poor Thing, we should also tell you about the production’s immensely talented cast and crew. First up we have the fabulous Siti Khalijah Zainal, recently seen in the M1 Fringe Festival highlight Best Of by TNS. She is joined by Life! Theatre Awards 2014 nominee Sharda Harrison, who has been lauded for her performance in The Crucible by Toy Factory Productions. Rounding up the cast are the equally talented Dwayne Lau and Joshua Lim. Poor Thing is also written by acclaimed local playwright Haresh Sharma and helmed by TNS’s artistic director Alvin Tan.

All in all, the show promises to deliver an incisive look into what drives road rage in Singapore, addressing hotly debated topics such as citizen journalism and the ugly side of Singaporeans.
