8 Women, 1 Murder – Who did it?

International Women’s Day falls on 8th March of every year, aiming to inspire women and celebrate their contributions. While March draws to a close, we have local production 8 Women, presented by Sing’ Theatre to pay homage to the great women of local theatric productions.

With the stellar cast of local veteran actresses Tan Kheng Hua, Neo Swee Lin and Daisy Irani, these familiar faces are sure to assure audiences that their acting is nothing short of entertaining. Throw in established actress and mentor Kimberly Creasman, the fresh faces of Serene Chen, Morgane Stroobant, Sophie Wee and Julia Abueva, the youngest cast member at 17 years old, the dynamics of the eight actresses burst on set and does not disappoint. The amount of talent bursting from the cosy SOTA Drama Theatre brings the stage to life to the delight of the audience.

For those who think of the play titled “8 Women” as strongly feminist in plot, you couldn’t be further from the truth. The approximately two hour play revolves around the murder of a man who lives with 8 Women. Naturally, hormones would rage. The typical murder mystery theme of “whodunit” is revamped in this sexy plot of hidden secrets and motives which unravels gradually as the play progresses. Be assured to be kept guessing (betting, even) till the very last moment to the somewhat dark humoured ending.

An interesting fact to note was that director Samantha Scott-Blackhall (credited as the 9th woman behind the play) kept even her actresses guessing as to the identity of the murderer. It was only till around five days before the gala premiere did she inform the ‘killer’ and in the process of rehearsing, managed to procure the genuine shock of the actresses while keeping in character!

As a final note, the cast also gave due credit to the men who were helping out backstage and do take note of the one-man band at the left corner of the stage who plays every and I do mean every single piece of music or sound effect for the play.

So.. whodunit? Catch it before it ends on 7 April 2013!
