Season 4 of the hit reality singing competition The Voice is back with a twist! Before you get hooked on the latest installment of the widely successfully show, here are 10 things you should know!
The coaching panel received a massive shake-up as Christina Aguilera and Cee Lo Green are not returning as coaches for the fourth installment. (Huge bummer, I know. I will miss #TeamXtina). Replacing them are global superstars Usher and Shakira. The single-moniker singers join Blake Shelton and Adam Levine on the spinning red chairs. However, it is implied that both Xtina’s and Cee Lo’s seats will always be kept for them.
The returning coaches have won (Shelton: 2, Levine: 1) all previous editions of The Voice, with Blake Shelton as the defending champion. It would be interesting to see how they play this trump card when trying to win contestants over from the new coaches
(3) ALL COACHES PLAY AN INSTRUMENT
This time round, all the judges play an instrument. We have Adam on drums, Blake and Usher on the guitar and last but not least, we have Shakira…who plays the harmonica. Okay.
(4) NEWBIES BUT NOT NOOBIES
Not to be trifled with, the new coaches boast impressive resumes. Shakira has amassed 10 Grammy Awards and is the highest-selling Columbian artist of all time. Usher, dubbed one of the King of Pop, brought a certain Justin Beiber to the world stage. The competition between the four coaches just got that much hotter.
Season 4 carries season 3’s format forward and there is no major changes…as yet. Season 3 introduced some changes mid-season to spice up the competition. So don’t be surprised if new changes are announced.
Not a single participant is tone-deaf or can’t sing. The Voice is a hunting ground of talented singers, looking for their big break. For starters, aspiring singer, Judith Hill bravely tackles a Christina Aguilera (like no one should cover Miss Xtina) classic and managed to soar with it. Receiving the coveted four-button push.
(7) CONTRASTING COACHING STYLES
The new coaches bring vastly different styles of coaching to the table. From early episodes, Shakira’s seems more nurturing and she plays the “You’re a female and I’m a female, we should watch out for each other” card. Usher, on the other hand, indicated from the get-go that he would be very militarist in his approach.
(8) SHAKIRA’S PREGNANCY-HORMONES COME OUT TO PLAY
Shakira comes into the blind audition rounds of season 4 pregnant with her first child. And girlfriend ain’t playing nice. To quote Mr Adam Levine, “You have a pregnant, hormonal Colombian and she’s ready to bust some heads. She ain’t messing around.” So, Blake, Usher and Adam, watch out.
(9) BE PREPARED TO CRY
Tears-inducing backstories of the contestants will touch you and perhaps inspire you. The things that they to overcome and the losses they have endured will have you reaching for your Kleenex.
(10) PLAYGROUND FOR REMIXING
Many of The Voice contestants have their own sense of creativity and unique sounds. Remixing hits is The Voice’s thing (think Melanie Martinez from last season). This time round, Christian Porter shocks the world with a blues-inspired cover of a wildly popular LMFAO hit.
Season 4 of The Voice runs on AXN every Sunday at 8.10pm.
