First and foremost, be warned because this article is mildly spoiler-ish. (We won’t spoil the most important parts of the plot for you though, so don’t worry!) Do note: this article was written based on what went down in the book (that, of course, had BETTER be in the movie!)

Synopsis of The Hunger Games:
Set in a future where the Capitol selects a boy and girl between the ages of 12 to 18 from the 12 districts to fight to the death on live television, Katniss Everdeen volunteers to take her younger sister’s place for the latest match.

The on-screen adaptation of the first book in Suzanne Collins’ trilogy has not opened yet in theatres worldwide but already The Hunger Games is looking promising. It has earned rave reviews after its world premiere, currently with a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score based on 14 reviews.

Before the premiere in Singapore on March 22, read on for some of the most exciting stuff you can expect to see on the big screen when you catch the flick in theatres. Happy Hunger Games!

1. The Opening Ceremonies

Before the dreaded Games begin, the tributes from all 12 districts are dressed in flashy costumes relating to the district they’re from and paraded for the whole of Panem to see. For example, the tributes from District 1, which specialises in the production of luxury items, wear the glitziest costumes year after year decked in gems. It’ll be interesting to see what the tributes from the various districts will wear since not all the costumes were described in the book.

District 12, where Katniss and Peeta are from, specialises in the production of coal. It’s Katniss’ coal-inspired costume in the opening ceremonies that earns her the nickname ‘The Girl on Fire’, which will stick with her for the rest of the trilogy. Here’s hoping the movie version of her costume does the book some justice!

2. The Bloodbath

The Games begin. When the tributes from each of the 12 districts step off their launching plates after the horn sounds, chaos ensues. The kids scramble for various objects that are lying around and stacked in a Cornucopia distanced further away (e.g. weapons, backpacks, food, sleeping bags).

This is the part when many of the 24 contestants will die. Considering the movie’s rating is PG13, there probably (and unfortunately) won’t be much gore or graphic violence, especially since it all involves children. It’s gonna be interesting to see how it’ll be portrayed, if they’ll even show much of it at all, considering most of the flick will be from Katniss’ POV.

3. Fire in the Woods

The annual Hunger Games take place in an technologically-advanced Arena where the environment can be controlled and manipulated. Basically the Gamemakers can do whatever they want, especially when anticipating crowds in the Capitol are getting bored with the lack of action on their television screens. Meaning: the tributes are screwed.

Katniss has to literally run for dear life when a inferno breaks out in the woods she has chosen to take refuge in. Like it isn’t bad enough that other tributes will be on the look out for her. Girl on fire indeed.

4. The Tracker-jacker Attack

Tracker-jackers may look like ordinary wasps, but in truth they’re far more deadly. They’re genetically-altered versions of wasps, conceived and created in the labs of the Capitol. They are genetically wired to attack anyone or anything that disturbs their nest. Once a they make a person their target, they will follow him or her. Stings can result in hallucinations or even death.

In an attempt of self-defence, Katniss sends a tracker-jacker nest falling to the ground, thereby setting them on a bunch of tributes looking to take her out. Will the tributes escape unharmed?

A scene which always gets to us is the three-fingered salute signifying thanks, admiration and goodbye to a loved one.

5. The Wolves a.k.a Muttations

Without spoiling too much, this scene is set to arguably one of the most intense scenes in the book that the movie execs have yet to release any stills or clips of (and for good reason).

Near the conclusion of the Games – when the Gamemakers are looking to spice things up yet again – a pack of large, agile and vicious wolves are let loose in the Arena to drive the remaining tributes into the same place (the Capitol loves a good ol’ fashioned tribute showdown). These creatures are able to balance on their hind legs, jump very high, and have four-inch long razor-sharp claws.

These wolves have also been genetically-enhanced by the Capitol and will result in the grisly death of one tribute. There’s also something about these wolves that make them particularly unsettling and sinister, but we won’t say what.
