Review| Jennifer Lopez – Love? (2011)
I just couldn’t help but notice how Jennifer Lopez is leveraging on her stint on American Idol by releasing her 7th Studio album Love? yesterday. In fact it’s made even more blatant when she premiered her video for On The Floor on the idol stage.
Now on to the music. Despite her status as a commercial superstar, Love? fails to live up to it.
Love? is filled with heavily mixed dance tracks that is disturbingly overdone and bland. However, it does feature an extremely edgy and sophisticated sound, which is easily attainable by now so it’s not a biggie.
Maybe i’m just overly critical or perhaps i’m sick of hearing the same sound over and over again, but i suppose the music isn’t all that bad!
I’m Into You (feat. Lil Wayne) stands out for sounding like a true blue JLo song. It is a catchy dance song but it still reminds us that she is a latina. This same magic is also formulated in Papi.
The gems in Love? are the club friendly songs! Invading My Mind, Hypnotico and Charge Me Up are possibly the best songs from the album as they have a distinctive sound that is memorable compared to its repetitive siblings.
I suppose one of the things that makes this album a slight drag to listen to is how heavily edited her vocals are. Lopez mentioned that Love? features her best vocals yet.
Well if nasal and flat is what you deem to be great vocals, then perhaps that would explain why American Idol is eliminating good singers every single week. Now if only they allow auto tune on the Idol stage.
The album that is most comparable to Love? would have to be Britney’s Femme Fatale, simply because it is stuffed with dance music that sounds great and is worthy of worship on it’s own. The problem is that every other song in mainstream music is a dance song.
This angers me because while Love? delivers as a dance record, it doesn’t serve any justice to Lopez’s comeback as it fails to set her apart from the sea of intense vocal enhanced ‘musicians’ present.
Overall Rating : 3/5
It is definitely worth a listen if you are a fanatic of dance music. If you can’t stand Femme Fatale, please do not pursue this.
