5 Key Trends of Men’s Fashion Week 2011 Singapore
As the week comes to an end, so is our MFW reportage for the past 2 weeks. And what an exhilarating ride it has been!
Thus, as our final MFW post (until some big scandal breaks out), we’ve painstakingly compiled all the key menswear looks you need to know for the Fall/Winter 2011/2012 season. Arm your wallets to grab these items fast!
Plus, grabbing stuff in trend means you’re in the know ;)
From fur-collared outerwear to velvet suits, here’s 5 items you need for Fall/Winter 2011/2012!
KEY TREND #1: Fur-collared outerwear

Fall/Winter’s all about grabbing those parkas and trenchcoats that have been collecting dust in the wardrobe for the past 6 months. What better way to inject some life and luxe into the usually staid outerwear than by adding some fur lining? (Faux fur, of course.)
Fur lapels on suits, fur-collared trenchcoats, fur-lined hooded outerwear – it seems outerwear this year is all about adding that extra bit of texture to make the outerwear pop! Labels such as Songzio, Canali, G.I.L Homme and Boss Black rode on the fur wave and you should too.
HOW TO ROCK IT IN SINGAPORE:
Fur-collared capes, suits and hooded jackets look like the way to go in our climate.

KEY TREND #2: Velvet suits

Playing with textures also is a key trend this upcoming season. The classic suit is given an update with a velvet skin to give it extra punch whilst keeping the look subtle and clean.
This the perfect opportunity to play around with colours – Canali did so with luxe shades of emerald green and dusty purple to add a duo-tone kick to the material.
HOW TO ROCK IT IN SINGAPORE:
It’s not that difficult to wear velvet suits in our climate; just maybe not in open-air situations if you’re really prone to sweating.

KEY TREND #3: Oversized/elongated puffer outerwear
As seen on Boss Black by Hugo Boss.

Whether it was jackets or vests, puffer outerwear came back with a vengeance, be it in diamond or rectangular patterns. The look was paired in muted colours to lessen the OTT effect whilst keeping the unique quality of the garment.
We saw this look in many collections – even labels like Boss Black and Canali hopped on the bandwagon to make the puffer jacket cool again.
HOW TO ROCK IT IN SINGAPORE:
We suggest you keep this jacket in the closet unless you want to battle against our humid climate. You could put on a simple puffer vest (high-street labels like Zara stock this) to replace a traditional vest in more wacky settings. But strictly indoors, please.
–
KEY TREND #4: Turtlenecks
As seen on Boss Black by Hugo Boss.

Yes, dahlings, old is in – the quintessential look that made the 60s and 70s is back and ready to rock! Turtlenecks made a huge comeback with nearly every single show covering this look.
From turtleneck shirts (stiff collars eeeek) to pullovers paired with suits, turtlenecks provided a subtle quirky touch to classic looks but beware, this is not for people with short necks or double chins.
HOW TO ROCK IT IN SINGAPORE:
Not a practical outdoors look, but you can definitely pull this off in a smart casual indoor setting. Best to choose complementary colours to your outfit (and please pair this with a blazer) but if you want the turtleneck to pop, choose a bright red or camel and make the rest of the look muted to add a touch of sophistication.
–
KEY TREND #5: Colour-blocking/material-patching
As seen on Raoul.

From two-tone jackets in contrasting or complementary colours to PVC or leather panels on shirts and jackets, clothes are no longer just about being made in one colour or material alone. This quirky take on clothes is really hot this season and a must-have in your wardrobe to add some spice to your ensemble.
We loved seeing two-tone pants with a different colour on the front & back as well as PVC panels on one-half of a baseball jacket to give it extra sheen and pizzazz. However, refrain from elbow & pocket patches: they look more like rags than riches.
HOW TO ROCK IT IN SINGAPORE:
Now this is such a practical look that we can see on Orchard Road! Don’t overkill the colour-blocking however: stick to one clothing item with a two-tone patching to it and make sure both colours complement your outfit.
Which means we shouldn’t see purple-white jeans in town. ;)

That is it for our MFW reportage! A big THANK YOU for your support thus far as we hope to bring you more event reportage… and a little bit of overheard quotes along the way.
